What about the idea of making tx battery packs using the Radio Shack battery holder and soldering on the required tx connector.
One could get very reasonably priced high capacity packs if it works. My concern would be the reliability.

you gotta make sure you do it right, or it will be a waste of money and effort. make sure you have correct voltage and stuff, or something might mess up
