For the folks that use gassers, can you recommend the "O.S" of gas engines? I'm "thinking" about looking at a 30-40cc gasser for a 3D model. I need light, reliable, and powerful. I DO NOT want to spend days in the pits fighting to get the thing started and tuned. I was flying two weekends ago and a guy came to the field with a new gasser and spent the better part of 3 hours just trying to get the thing started. I left after 4hrs and he still wasn't up in the air. This is what I want to avoid. I'll shell out the extra bucks if it starts and tunes as easily as an O.S. two stroke. I know OS is coming out with a 50cc in December, but that's more engine than I need.
I know nothing about gassers. So what do you think? DLE? Zenoah?

Zenoah and Fuji are both outstanding. Desert Aircraft is another good one. Iam really impressed with the DLE's too and plan on using one on a current project. Even some of the "no-name", low cost Chinese engines run very well for the money.
Iwould not be concerned about fighting to make a gas engine run. If somebody was struggling that bad with one then there was either something wrong with it, it was set up improperly or he did not know what he was doing. Gas engines are almost always easy to start, run great and don't require a lot of fiddling once the carb is adjusted.
For that 3D plane, take alook at the DLE-30. If you want something larger, there are plenty of 40-43cc engines out there. That Fuji-43EI is a little pricey but it is one of the most reliable, best running gas engines I have seen.

JBA is another Chinese gas engine company that gets good reviews and are low priced, you can get a 50cc from them for 299.00. They also make a 15cc gas engine. The LHS has a 15cc in stock, basically looks like an EVO nitro with a webra carb.

Hey CG you can store it at my house. I will even fly it often to keep the cob-webs off of it.

So far I haven't met a DLE I didn't like. I have been setting up the 30s for the most part but got to do a set up on the 55, both are great right out of the box except for the spark plug that comes with the 30. It's some no name made in china plug that looks like a CM-6 but it isn't. Once that is removed and tossed and the good plug is installed the 30 fires right up and requires no tuning to speak of. The 55 runs as well as the DA but the DLE casting is a bit rougher. I haven't opened either of them up to see inside so can't say what the machining looks like. In the last year the DLE is turning into the number one engine for the under 50cc engines. It's hard to beat the price so if you can't afford a DA then the DLE is a great choice. There are pages and pages written about this engine in the gas engine forum, well worth reading.

Hey, my wife's sister is not too far from you. Nice big garage out back for storage. I will gladly fly the stuff when I am there. Either that or strip all the good stuff off and bring it back to CA with me.

Hmmmmm? The O.S. of gas engines? Heavy and expensive for it's power and prone to cylinder delamination. Hmmmmm?
Seriously, Zenoah is rugged and dependable. I have two Fujis that I like and have had very good luck with but have heard complaints. Syssa is (I believe) American made and I would throw business that way just because. Desert Aircraft are light, nice and priced accordingly. Same with 3W.
The latter two if you want a serious 3-D model.

I have one big plane left and it's a bipe hanging on my wall, too much work hauling it to the field so it just hangs and impresses people when they come over. I'm flying 60 size planes now and enjoy it more. I am looking for a plane for my 2.4 gasser though. I haven't given away any engines though but the biggest one I have here in NV is a G-62. I'm assembling and setting up big planes for others though. That way I have all the fun without having to haul and store. I do spend too much time at the field doing the trim and tune work for others but I get to fly a lot of different planes this way.Sorry CG, no room here!!

The Fuji manual gave that clockwise (backwards) until it pops suggestion and Ihad never tried that before (we used to start the Cox 0.049 glow engines by flipping backwards).
Once it has run and is still warm -one or two clockwise flips and it's running again. No heater/glow driver and no starter motor and battery needed. Just a leather glove and a can of gas with a pump. Nice and simple.
And that sound of a gas engine idling after you flip start it. It's just the best sound there is (IMHO). Not the screech of a glow engine; but a great "put-a-put-a-put-a" that sounds airplaneish.
Ithink Ihave adjusted the carb jets once this year since the start of flying season. Probably will have to richen up a bit since it's getting colder now. No more futzing than some 2-cycle or 4-cycle glows. Much less than the last Super Tigre Iowned (very sensitive to adjustments).
My little G-26 Zenoah (also magneto) has days that the first start is a bit "crankier". But even so If it hasn't started by the 12th flip Istart checking for fuel feed issues. Thereafter, one or two flips gets it running after refueling. My Fuji 43EI - two or three flips even cold after that choke-on "pop".

I would suggest the DLE engines as well. I have 25 hours on a DLE 55 and it has been great. 2 30's, 1 50, 3 55's and a 111 at our field and they all run great. If your looking for 3D then stick to the lighter electronic ignitions. The new DLE 20 is a power house and the reviews have been great.

I have a new DLE 111 fitted to a large 100" thunderbolt and couldn't be more pleased with it, done first run with cowl off tuned the top end slightly to get best rpm then cowl on and maidened her
she runs beautifully and idles so slowly. done two flights now and wouldn't hesitate in buying another.
