Thanks guys. There were so many misconceptions out there that I felt it was time to clear the air and try to make the nature of the problem understood.

You are so right. Every time there is a discussion about Flutter here in the forum, I think about all the radio discussions that go absolutely nowhere but get repeated and repeated time and time again. Not that I care what happens, but sometimes it turns ugly.

And, sometimes the cause and effect of flutter in the discussions are somewhat off base. Now, I have a place for folks to go to for the "straight skinny".

Nice Mike. Now make the address for the thread a sticky!! In several forums. The video was outstanding, I have seen flutter a few times but nothing quite that bad.

Great info for the Great Planes Escapade ARF discussion. The Epade suffers extreme flutter when pushed too fast. It usually destroys the elevator leading to a rapid uncontrolled landing.

Minniflyers write up and video are excellent. Just remember, flutter can exist on individual surfaces also, not necessarily on the main wing as in his video. You are more apt to get flutter on one of the surfaces, i.e. rudder, elevator or ailerons than on the entire wing. However, the same principals apply, shoot for low mass and extreme stiffness in the individual structures to minimize the possibility of flutter.

Speaking of Flutter, did anyone catch the video taken from inside the Qantas Air Bus 380 that had the engine explode. I caught a brief glimpse at 10am PST on one of the news channels and when I came in to the PC to see if it was on line, I found a link, but it wouldn't open and now it's gone. The shot was back onto the wing from the cabin and it looked like spoilers were deployed and they and the TE was were doing quite a dance.Sure wish I could find it again.

By the way Mike, great article. Well explained. A couple of our guys, actually about 10% of our club are active in the aircraft industry, retired from it, or teaching at Cal Poly. I'll link to the article on our web site if it is OK with you. Some of these guys like to debate things like this and at times debate themselves. It will be interesting to see their comments. Myself, KISS. I don't need to know all the thrust vectors and calculations. It happens and your explanation is spot on. By the way, We have a large Guitar store in town.
