Some of my planes require expo, you would not fly them with out it. The older guys that never had expo are the ones who still say don't use it. Funny how they have cell phones though. 
I taught myself how to fly on a nexstar and the expo helped me. So did lots of the other functions found on a computer radio. If your planning to stay in the hobby a radio upgrade now would be a good investment. I decided on the Futaba 7C 2.4 for myself and very happy I did.
