for a person who has never really flown before? I have played simulatore (real flight and FMS) and I can fly the planes and land and stuff like that on the sim. so would I be able to fly a zagi??

Nice gallery Dan and you are obviously into the cars and that is fine. You will find aircraft quite a bit differant and can be a little more challange and that makes it so very much more satisfying.

First to answer your question about the Zagi. While a nice flying bird and a lot of fun you will find it quite a bit faster flying airplane than what is normally considered a 'park flyer' but more important than that, what makes it a very poor choice as a trainer is the fact that it is a flying wing. A 'wing' is the most difficult airplane configuration of all to maintain orientation with That coupled with the fact it is fairly fast means you will tend to fly it to far away compouding the orientation problem. Orientation is probably the most difficult skill to learn for a new flyer and for this reason it is a poor choice.

If you want to start with electrics, fine but avoid all the barely controlled two control types that only have a directional control and an elevator function or in some cases instead of a elevator a throttle is substituted. Even worse are types that have two motors that are only controlled with collective power to try and control the up and down while steering by applying more power on one side. All of these things will be virtually useless if your goal is to fly an airplane. Only consider a model that provides three channels and a: Rudder, elevator and throttle consider nothing else. You will have lots of suggestions on this post as to specific types.

The Sim are good but its a differant real world out there so don,t let a sim fool you into thinking you can skip rungs on the learning ladder concerning airplane types. If you climb that ladder there will be a lot more satisfaction for you and a good chance this can turn into a lifetime obsession.

I learned with a Zagi and it was a great trainer for me. The great thing about it is you can have a few crashes and not hurt anything, just throw it up again. After several crashes I was flying. I recently bought a glow plane and had no problem flying it. So from my experience it was a good way to go.

I also self-taught myself on a Zagi, and if I can could it, so can you. JMC,,,is completely right on. A Zagi can take a beatin' and keep on tickin' and the transition from that to something a bit bigger and faster, shouldn't be too big of a deal. Go for it.

I agree with John. Zagis are not difficult to fly, but they are very challenging with regards to orientation. Most beginners tend to fly very large patterns, because it really takes some time for the brain to keep up with the airplane for a while. These big patterns give you plenty of straight and level time to plan your turns, and breathe. A Zagi is about the worst choice for flying big patterns, because when you become confused you will not know what it's doing--and sometimes where it is. A couple of inches thick wing can disappear edge on very easily.

They are durable, but your purpose is to learn to fly, not crash. Create a situation that fosters that.

i agree with the hard to see bit, but they also tip stall easy because it has elevator all the way to the tips and any small difference and shes gonna spin, also on take off pulling up aint gonna work, i had a student who swore his wouldn't fly, he was simply trying to pull up too early before it got any speed and tip stalling in. once i showed him how he was ok, but still lost which way it was going and went in.

I never had a problem at all with orientation since the first day, I have a dark solid color on the bottom and stripes on the top. They will tip stall fairly easy, but with a little altitude you can practice recovering and after a couple times it is easy to recover from. I'm still convinced it's a great way to go for a first plane.

Just make the top a contrasting color to the bottom and add a white *arrow* stripe to the bottom. Flying overhead is usally the worst part for me and this makes A LOT easier!!!

dan remember if your wanting to start flying a zagi there are a few things you can do on the simulator to help make you first flying experience easier. when you are paying with you simulator, try this. completely mess up the trim tabs on your radio for aileron and elevator functions. now use the hand launch method in your fms program. now the name of the game is to keep your eye on the plane, keep the plane in the air and adjust both trim tabs until the zagi flys completely level at full throttle. this means no descent or climbing. This is what your first flight in the real world is going to be like because no one can build a perfect plane and all planes will need trim adjustment particularly the first flight. if you can do this without looking away from your plane then you are on to a good start
