I'm getting ready to build a four * 60 in the next month or so. I was planning on putting in a 4stroke but think for the size needed I'll have to pay to much for a "low wing trainer".
So I was thinking about the supertiger g75 because it the max size 2stroke and not a lot of money.
Any help or ideas would be great.

I guess if it's better to have a four stroke I could get a used .91. What would be the biggest 4stroke I could put in the 4*60 without it being to heavy or to powerful for the frame to handle the stress.

Last one I built with a four stroke used the Saito 100. It was a good combo. So would an OS .91 or if you can tune an engine real well you may want to look at the {this hurts me to say} Magnum.[&:]

An .80 four stroke will have about the same power as a .60 2 stroke, but will be turning a bigger prop. The decision really depends on how you want the plane to perform and what your future plans are.

luciuswillson,
Hi and WOW I am in the same boat. I got a started 4 star with a Saito 91 but I sold the Siato off for the $ reason. I went with a Supertiger 91. The 75 if you can get a deal would be fine.
I really think the lower weight 2 cycles are better for this plane. "Lighter is always better" works for me. Tower had 91 SuperTigers on sale for 125ish so look around, sale season is here.
Honestly I wanted to keep the Saito but I can buy 2 great 2 strokes for the same $.
Are you doing any MODS to your Four Star? I want to reduce the dihedral 50%, increase the rudder by 1/4", sheet the turttle deck with 1/32 ply and trim the canopy slightly smaller. Oh I always add a tank hatch. Many clip a bay off each end but I prefer not. I like them gracefull

G'day
Over the years I have had three Four Star 40s, one Four Star 60 and one Four Star 120. I still have one of each.
My first one was a 40 and it had an OS 48 four stroke. I was still very much a learner at the time but I liked the way it flew.
Next 40 had a Super Tigre S40. I did not like the way it flew. It wanted to fly too fast for my taste. I probably should have put props with less pitch on it.
Current one has a Saito 62. Plenty of pull but not too fast.
My 60 started with a Saito 72. This was fine for normal aerobatics but my son flew it and said it needed more. So, I put a Saito 100 in it. Brilliant. I love flying it. That's it on the left there when it had the 72 in it. It is about 6 years old now.
My 120 has always had a Saito 150S. Tons of go and sounds amazing. I was flying it last week for the first time in several months. I need to fly it more often. It is the best to fly.
The 40s tend to be a bit difficult to land and it is easy to have it just drop out of the air. The 60 floats well on landing and the trick with it is to not try to put it on the ground until the nose is starting to go up. If you put it on the ground too fast, it will bounce every time. Bruce Tharpe, who designed it, says this on his website.
The 120 is easy to land but it too will bounce unless you let it slow down so it starts to go "nose high".
Really great planes though.

Had one with a Super Tiger 61 ringed engine in it, flew extremely well and balanced
right on the mark with that engine. Changed the canopy out for a sleaker look with a

Good afternoon!
I have a 4 Star 60 that I've powered with both a Saito 100 and a ST .75.
Right now, it has the ST 75 and that is my prefered set up. The 4 Star serves as my "quickstrike" plane. Always in my car, ready to go at a moments notice. The 2stroke requires after run oil, but I don't have to jerk around with shooting up the breather vent like on a 4 stroke to ensure good bearing coverage.
Easy and fast. The 75 and the 4 Star is a great, great combo. Good vertical, good top end, good pull on the tall grass fields.

You're funny Gene!

I'd take the Magnum or Super Tigre over OS any day...

$175 for the TT91 is not a bad price if it is in good shape. TT 4-strokes are lightweight as far as 4-strokes go. I have a TT75 4-stroke, great engine.
Realize that the ST60, 75, and 90 all weigh the same. If you are going the 2-stroke route, I'd get the 90 for a few more $$$ and torque.
I have a few engines of different brands, 2-stroke and 4-stroke. The only engine that I had to give up on is a Magnum 52 4-stroke. Don't if it is bad luck or bad tuning, but I can't get it!!![&o]

Dude, you can get a .91 4-stroke ASP brand from Hobby King for $129.00 plus shipping, it's an ASP which is the same as a Magnum version. I have several they run great and last as long as the other brands..!!

Magnum makes a REAL nice 91 4 stroke for under $200 and its just exactly like the old surpass OS 4strokes. I have a lot of 4stroke planes and this would be PLENTY for a Sig 4 star and it would have plenty of vertical!

The question is whether the OP will be able and willing to get acquainted with 4-stroke maintenance like adjusting the valve lash. It might be better for him to start out with a 2-stroke. Just wondering.

Why bother sending off to China for one at that price when Hobby People has the Magnum ,91 on sale all the time.

It is funny when looking at price differences. It was $129.00 here last time I saw it on sale. Not that I would ever bother with them but for those that like them they are a good deal. Maybe it's just like most things these days and they just jacked up the price??
