Default First Monokote Use

HI Y'all! MONOKOTE! Wow what a pain! I'm doing my first covering job on a 4Starr 60 wing. And the first panel was shaky. But by the end of the wing I've got it figured out. Need lots of heat. 270 deg measured with a IR thermometer. Any tips or tricks for using this stuff would be appreciated!

Thanks

Do a search in this forum or in the Tips and Techniques forum and you will find a plethera of information on the subject. Also, check out Minnfliers How-To Cover with Monokote/Ultrakote tips. Very helpful.

Regards,

Victor

Looks good to me!

Just wondering...Why Monokote? I've found that Ultracote is about 10 times easier... Just something to think about.

Hi The LHS has a wide range of colors in the Monokote, and a smaller selection of ultra kote.

And at the time of purchase I didn't know any better!..

all in all I like the results. Tomorrow I start on the fuselage!

"practice practice practice" With time and patients everyone who uses film coverings discovers techniques through experience that make the next model better than the last. Or as my instructor told me years ago " Just cover the damn thing. Do you want to fly or Just stand there and look at it".

Mark the one thing I was told and always pass on is to always keep a supersharp blade in your cutting utensial if the blade starts "skipping" or tearing the covering change it even though it might seem sharp the last plane I covered was a .40 size and I used about 7 or more blades didnt keep count but I always buy them in a 100 pack.

One thing about monokote is that you have to pull it as you iron it down. Leave lots of overhang so that you can really get a grip on it. Think "wasteful" and you'll have the right amount, unfortunately. An old but good book is Tom's techniques, one of the Harry Higley series of RC books.

Eventually i have to cover a couple planes that are almost finished... why UltraCote over MonoKote?

225 deg is the key for a good covering job & use windex for most of your covering! (Not Heat)

Ultracote is more user friendly, and shrinks better.

Ultracote also does something that I think Monokote doesn't do. The glue activates fully at a lower temperature than the plastic starts to strink. So with Ultracote, you can get the film glued down and work with the stuff, move it around, pull it tight by hand, then turn up the iron just a little bit to start the strinking and get it really tight. This is all in the instructions that come wrapped around the covering roll. Btw, Ultrakote is now available in more colors than it used to be, it looks like they are really going to try to take on Monokote for selection, A real bonus.

Ultracote also strinks at a lower temp than Monokote, I use it directly over foam, which you can't do with Monokote (but you can do it with Towerkote/Econokote).

Oh, on the silly side, I've done covering-over-covering by using something low temp like Ultracote over top of a high temp covering like Monokote. It actually works well, but not well enough to intentionally buy rolls of different brand covering. I did it because that was what was lieing around, and it worked well.

Does ultracote and monokote have the same scratch resistance?
