Default li-po batteries

I just read in a different thread that storing li-po batteries fully charged was bad for them. Is this true? If so, what is the best way to discharge them? I have 3 that way and won't be flying again till spring time. HELP!!!

Yea they should be stored at whats called a "nominal charge" or for a 3 cell 11.1 v.

A good charger can discharge them or you can run them down a bit with a airplane

If I hook up my charger, how will this discharge them to a "nominal state?" I figured this would just charge them.

Your charger must have "discharge" capability.

I would rather risk storing a fully charged Lipo , than let a cell drop to low.
But Yea, this is news to me too.

i'm told it degrades the lithium to keep them fully charged in storage. That and full charge is also when the battery is most volatile. I fly my batteries and then store them discharged which is normally between 3.7-3.8volts/cell.

"Battery Storage – If you don’t plan on using your lithium battery for prolonged periods of time, then you’ll want to reduce the charge level to 40% and place the battery in the fridge (not freezer). Storing the battery at 100% charge level applies unnecessary stress and can cause internal corrosion. On the other hand, if the charge is too low, the battery can become permanently unusable, due to battery self discharge. This is why manufacturers recommend storing your lithium batteries at 40% charge, rather than either extreme."

"Test data confirms that storage of lithium-ion batteries is best if the cell is partially discharged. In one test by Cadex Electronics ( http://www.buchmann.ca ) after 1 year storage at 25°C the non-recoverable capacity remaining is 96% when stored at 40% initial charge level, but only 80% if stored with 100% initial charge level. This effect is reduced at lower temperature and is a non-issue at 0°C. At higher temperatures the effect is much worse. Cadex's recommendations are to store below 15° C at 40% of full charge (3.5 volts per cell). Our experience is that with cells stored at room temperature for 3 years that the non-recoverable capacity did not decrease, so this is probably manufacturer dependent."
