Default 4 stroke x 2 stroke

While looking back in time and comparing the 2 stroke versus 4 stroke real boat engines that my dad had, the 4 stroke was very much quite, smooth on low speeds, no smoke.
Is there any advantage in RC 4 stroke over 2 stroke engines?What's the deal?

dont know what the advantages are as i havent flown with my 4 stroke yet, but the four stroke does sound better and is more fun to take apart.

4-STROKES HAVE MORE TORQUE AND DON'T HAVE TO TURN AS MANY RPM FOR POWER. WITH MORE TORQUE, YOU CAN SWING A BIGGER PROP. THEY ARE MORE EXPENSIVE HOWEVER BUT WORTH THE MONEY IF YOU WILL BE IN R.C. FOR A WHILE.
THEY ARE ALSO MORE FUEL EFFICIENT THAN 2-STROKES.

2-STROKES ARE CHEAP TO MANUFACTURE, AND ARE MORE SIMPLE IN DESIGN. THEY TURN MUCH HIGHER RPM'S THAN 4-STROKES AND RELY ON TURNING A SMALLER PROP VERY FAST RATHER THAN A LARGER PROP MORE SLOWLY.

HAVING A LARGER PROP ON YOUR PLANE PRODUCES DRAG ON A PLANE IN FLIGHT AT IDLE WHICH CAN HELP SLOW THE PLANE DOWN SOME TOO.

ALOT DEPENDS ON YOUR FLYING STYLE AS TO WHICH CHOICE YOU MAKE. I AM BY NO MEANS AN AUTHORITY ON ANY OF THIS, BUT I THOUGHT I'D PITCH IN ANYWAY. GOOD LUCK!

Yes, but the putting back together is a pain.

Seriously, 4-strokes sound cool, are quieter, use less fuel, and swing bigger props at lower RPMs.

On the down side, they cost more, weigh more for the same power output, and can be harder to get running for some people.

four strokes swing a bigger prop at a lower rpm, causing the prop to be more efficient, quieter, and great for 3d planes. for the same amount of power, they give you about twice the amount of fuel efficiency. they also make a bit less mess than two strokes, and instead of sounding like weed-wacker engines, they sound a bit like the real thing.

two strokes turn faster, are a lot noisier, messier, and a lot less efficient. they are also a lot cheaper, and may be the better choice if your plane is fairly heavy. for instance, there is a comnpany called flying thingz that makes a flying lawnmower. it would be a heavy thing with a four stroke, but flies fine, lightly, and is capable of doing basic loops and rolls with a .50 two stroke. they also will load up when you idle them, while four strokes have a little less strong tendancy to do that.

Everything said here is true. But another thing is that 4-stroke engine make a big oil mess. But they pretty much are better in every way. EXCEPT for a racing plane, u definately need a two stroker there!

My OS FS-70SII engines make about half the oil mess my Thunder Tiger .46 Pro did. They turn slower and only intake glow fuel every other revolution. If you are using one that requires a higher oil mix then perhaps you have more oil to spread around.

Another advantage of the 4-strokes turning the bigger props is that with good throttle mix the pattern planes can achieve a very even speed whether climbing or descending. The larger props, when slowed down, give a braking effect on a dive.

And who doesn't like the slow, slow idle for a gentle landing aproach that a 4-stroke provides?

But most important is that they just sound so darned good in the air.

4 strokes are great engines. They allow you a lot more torque than two strokes, which makes hovering and torque rolls slighty easier to accomplish. Their only downside is that they can cost an arm and a leg in comparison to 2 strokes.
