The thin padding used under laminated flooring is what I use for the fuel tank. I put out the money for the rubber foam for my radio equipment.

As far as receivers and battery packs go, I was always told that the foam padding that the local HS sold was the only way to go. It absorbed vibration from the airplane airframes, especially when using the older type 72 receivers. The argument being that "synthetic" foam actually transmitted vibrations and static into whatever was wrapped in it. Like others RCers, I started to mount fuel tanks without a lot of padding, I think partly because of vastly improved prop manufacturing and epoxy motor mounts, etc.. I still use some foam under my 2.4 smt receivers and hold in place with velcro, so I guess I still cringe when I see bubble wrap and other padding, beside foam rubber, inside airframes, but just a thought, Bob.

By habit, I put the fuel tank in with some foam padding, but really not that much. Just enough to fill in the spaces to keep it centered. For the receiver, I generally mount the receiver on velcro that sticks to the ply mount that I construct. I then wrap the receiver with a small strip of velcro tape just to make sure it doesn't move. As for the battery, well, that too gets velcro'ed in place. And I wrap it with two strips of velcro to make sure it doesn't move either.

A few years ago, I was at the field flying with a few club members. One guy had his plane ready to go. I watched him prepare for flight. The receiver and battery were wrapped up in a jumble and just pushed into the compartment over the wing.. it was a low wing plane, the canope was removable and he had access to the electronics via the removable canope.

Well, he took off, and did a few maneuvers. At one point, he was up fairly high and then went inverted. Something fell out of his plane and just a few seconds later, he said that he did not have the plane. "I DON'T HAVE IT" he shouted, as we all watched it crash into the ground. We walked over to where it crashed, and about 50 or so feet away, I found his canope and his battery right next to each other. Yup... he didn't have it alright. He didn't secure anything. If his receiver wasn't held in the plane by the servo wires, I imagine I would have found it too.
