Default TAIL DRAGGER FOR AN OLD BEGINNER

IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I FLEW A TAILDRAGGER OR ANYTHING ELSE, ABOUT TWELVE YEARS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST ARF TAILDRAGGERS FOR A BEGINNER. MY MAIN CONCERN WOULD BE GROUND HANDLING ON TAKE OFFS AND LANDINGS. WHICH ONES HAVE WIDER LANDING GEAR. I'LL PROBABLY GET ONE IN A .40 OR .60 CLASS. YOUR HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED THANK YOU

Goldberg tiger2, you can build it as a tri gear or tail dragger.

Hard to beat the SIG 4-Star series. I suggest sheeting the wing leading edge, at least on top.
One can either use the kit gear or with a bit of beefing, one can modify to a wing gear and make it as wide as one wishes, within reason.

Great beater and does most anything I want to do.

Other than that if you want an ARF, go for one of the aerobatic 300 +/- things. Look for the most wing area for the least weight. They all fly well.

How about this for an "out of the box" suggestion....

I was out of R/C for 25 years. My passion is with WWI and earlier vintage planes. I too wanted a trainer-like plane to relearn with. I also wanted it to be a tail dragger because that is what I would eventually be building. I had the added desire for it to look somewhat vintage.

I settled on the Super Flying Models Eindecker (EIII). What a GREAT choice! It looks terrific (at least I think so) and fly great too. Even very seasoned pilots have said it is great fun to fly.

I just have an OS 40LA in it and it is not underpowered. (Keep in mind that I have no intention of burning holes in the sky. An EIII would look pretty odd doing hammerheads and hovering.) There is no reason to go more than a 46.

The plane is very reasonable at $109 from Horizon Hobby. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Here is a movie of it's maiden flight and a few pictures...

Great Planes Slow Poke 'sporty 40'.

Easy flying, s-l-o-w, tail dragger, that just floats (almost sits!) in the sky.

Also comes in an ARF!

I just converted the alpha trainer to a tail dragger. Took about two hours.

I was out for 25 years. Got a GP PT19 ARF and it has been a great trainer while requalifying. Very docile - lands itself and good on the ground. Powered with Saito 100
