After a few years of doing the RC car thing, my wife got me a plane for Christmas.
It is a Hobby King Sportsman S+.
Awesome plane, and imo, perfect for a beginner. Does exactly what it says it will.
It has the Safe +, GPS, autoland, and 3 skill levels built in.
Even my maiden flight was a blast. I read the instructions THOUROUGHLY, watched some youtube videos, and was off to a big open field.
Take off went perfect, I hit the "oh crap" button to see how that worked, flew around for a couple of minutes on my own in baby mode, and hit the auto land. All went exactly as hoped for.
I ran through four batteries, taking off and landing on my own (in baby mode), and having the safety features, I was very comfortable the whole time.
Half way through my first battery on day 2 I switched to intermediate mode. Challenging, but very doable and an absolute blast and felt as though I was actually flying the plane as opposed to the "system". Ran through the 4 batteries again, and the only problem that I CAUSED was a little bit of a nose heavy landing resulting in a bent front landing gear shaft.
Day 3, all in intermediate mode. No problems. Learned about the rudder for landing, and was even able to land it within a reasonable distance of my feet.
Day 4, back to work and no flying
.
All I can say is best present ever.
I'm hooked, and can't wait to get out again. We live on a lake, so I can't wait for the time to come when I am experienced enough to throw on some pontoons and be able to fly in the front yard.
Looking forward to all the dumb questions that I will get answered here.

Now that you've got your feet wet, contact a local club and have an instructor walk you through everything that your plane won't teach you. Just because the plane has a safety net built in, there are a lot of things you need to know that you don't know about yet that only an instructor can help you with. These will be needed for any other planes you may try to fly since they won't have the "OH CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" button to save you if things start to go wrong
