On a transmitter such as a Spektrum DX, how do people remember which switch is assigned to which function? Are some switches normally used - for instance - for throttle cut, for turning SAFE on and off, for landing gear, etc. so that from model to model, it's easy to remember?
Thanks,

I am really thinking the best way of knowing which switch does what is by pre-memorising them.
But I see your point that if you owned different model Tx's, you may not remember which switch does what. So then it would make great sense to standardise switch positions as much as possible. But I think the best option of all is to have one good Tx so you get to know it and only it.
On my DX9, I have set the Tx voice alerts to speak when ever I change a switch position. So for example, when I throw the SAFE mode switch, the voice calls out "Beginner" or "Intermediate" or "Experienced", dependent on switch position selected. That's of course enough for me to know I'm dealing with SAFE ( if I forgot ). Likewise for the throttle cut switch and the panic switch. This has to be pre-setup in the radio by the user.
If your radio doesn't have voice alerts to remind you what you just selected, I really am thinking the only other way, if you are willing to flick your eyes at the Tx while flying, is to label the switches if you have to.
As to your question of "Are there standard switches on DX Tx's for SAFE, etc.", yes, but only to a degree. I have the operating manual for the Apprentice STS 1.5 trainer plane in front of me and it shows at least 14 different Spektrum DX radios, from the DX4 to the DX20. There is a commonality between some of these models but not all. For example, the DX6,DX7(G2), DX8(G2), DX9, DX18 and DX20 are listed as having SAFE assigned to Switch B and Panic Recovery assigned to Switch I. Other model Tx's are listed differently.
If you look at the manuals for some of the simpler Spektrum radios ( lower DX numbers ), they don't even have these same switches and if they do, they are for some models, in completely different positions on the Tx, even differing between Mode 1 and Mode 2 sets in some cases.
