Y-Harness or not Y-Harness
I have flown 2 & 3-channel planes and sailplanes, but am moving into a nitro 4-channel trainer. Any thoughts/suggestions on using a y-harness on the aileron/rudder servos to fight adverse yaw?
Thanks,
DJ

Unless you plan on using a 3 channel transmitter on a 4 channel plane, you shouldn't have any
adverse yaw problems as long as the plane is trimmed correctly. With a 4 channel radio, you have full command of all three axis of the plane in flight and will trim and correct unwanted instabilities with the sticks and trims.

As Jesse said....
Also, when we DO couple rudder to ailerons to help coordinate turns, the mix is never 100%, which it would be when using a "Y". (We are usually closer to 10%.) I think using a Y on rudder and ailerons would make it harder to fly, not easier.
If you only have a 3 channel transmitter, fly eith either the rudder onlu, or ailerons only. (But lock the other surface at neutral somehow.)

In addition to what Jesse & Dennis said, keep in mind that it's a trainer....so adverse yaw shouldn't really be a problem......trainers are designed to turn just fine without having to coordinate rudder and aileron.

If you want them coupled do it in the transmitter. You would be a lot better pilot if you do it manually when you want them coupled, and then you can give just the amount of rudder you want. I have taught many people to use a rudder. Most people don't ever touch it when the plane is up there.

Good point FlyBoy. I've never used coupled rudder either, just know folks who do.
DJ,
You'd be much better off using a 4 channel radio, setting up each control s intended, then learning to use the left stick.
If you have to use a 3 channel radio on a 4 channel trainer, lock the rudder in position and leave it alone.

I started off with a Trainer and never touched the rudder until i got bored of the plane and tried hovering it...Ailerons and Elevator are the only things needed, but I would highly suggest getting a Computer Radio in the beginning as I did, just so you can get more models. I had the XP 662 and now the 10X...Believe me it will be worth it.

RE: Y-Harness or not Y-Harness
Thanks for all the great advice! I have a 4-channel radio for my trainer and will learn to fly it with the ailerons and rudder independent of each other. I appreciate all the input!
