Messed up my wing on a piper cub kit while building.
Can parts be ordered for a kit?
Heh, being the newbie that I am, I realized after assembling the one half
of the wing some of the ribs were in the wrong location.
And there is a fair amount of glue on them.
Plus the wing joiner thats help partially with deheidral I noticed after, some
were glued upside down.
The kit is from Great Planes
I would hate to scrap it The rest was comming out great.
Even my fingers glued together nicely
Thing about learning the hard way is you'll more then likely to remember it
next time.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
Call Great Planes. They will sell parts or sheets separately. Or make more ribs yourself and rebuild it. This is what I would do. If you used epoxy at the joiner, heat from a gun will soften the joint so you should be able to take it part. For more information on cutting ribs look at CafeenMans wib site. http://www.airfieldmodels.com

Just curious didnt you put the plans down and build over top of them.
I know your a new builder. You have a good attitude after messing up
and some day you will be a great builder. Welcome to the ups and downs
of kit building. You now have gained experiance. LOL

RE: Messed up my wing on a piper cub kit while building.
yepp had the plans layed out with the wax paper and ect..
but I got over confident and figured welp I already built the left wing,
and the right should be the same but opposite.
lol, I looked at it and said to myself, "let me take a short cut",
Soooooo... instead of going part by part.......
-these 5 ribs go here
-these 2 ribs there
-these 4 here
-glue here and there
-and presto
-I just cut my time in half or 3/4
-and looks good....utt oohhh
-this wing dont match the other..lol
and the wing joiner, I didnt relize there was a slight angle on it. till after the glue set.
Next Time, I'm Taking My Time.
with hope, and help I'll get it fixed.

knight1: Thanks for the detail. I couldnt figure out how
you got mixed up on the ribs. I see now and see were it
could be easy to make that mistake. Maybe some of the
other new builders will see this post and benifit from
it.

RE: Messed up my wing on a piper cub kit while building.
I have t5his kit myself and am almost finished. Here is my suggestion on how to fix it. If you have the wood sheets the wood parts came out of you are in luck (they are still in your trash can aren't they). Use the old sheets where the parts you need were punched out to make a template for new ones. I am saving mine to make an additional clipped wing. Just cut out the parts you need and replace them. If you already sheeted the wing you will need to strip the sheeting to fix it. If you did not just cut or carefully break out the old parts and glue in the new ones. As for the dihedral brace. If you only have the laminated center ones in you can fix it. I would cut the brace off flush with the spars. Then using a razor saw try to cut out the remaining dihedral brace from between the spars. Be careful not to damage the spars. Fabricate new ones and carefully install the brace. Make sure it fits tightly after cleaning off any remaining glue and brace material.
Do not get too bummed this can be fixed. Just go very slow and be careful. Use sharp blades an be careful of cutting yourself. I built the first wing myself just fine. I went an checked those darn strut blocks twice. I glued them on the wrong side of the ribs anyway. So don't feel bad. Just take your time and all will be well.

To be honest with ya DB, looking at it I feel more confident on ordering a new wing kit.
I'll make some calls see if I can get a new wing kit.
I'll still keep the old one, and later on when I feel I could conquer it safely.
ty for the info DB

Wing kits are on their web site. They are pretty cheap.
You could scratch build those parts if you want to and save a bunch, but if you are more confident with a wing kit, go that way.
Good luck on it. A little extra time in building saves bucks. Everyone makes mistakes though. I have built hundreds of planes and made a really bonehead mistake on one last week because I put a part on without looking closely at the hand drawn plan and missed a stringer. Had to remove the parts and move them down 1/8 of an inch. Woops.

RE: Messed up my wing on a piper cub kit while building.
I have a goldberg cub that I started about 10 years ago. I messed up on the left wing and put it away. I put the trailing edge spar in the bottom center spar location and put the bottom center spar in the trailing edge location.
A couple of days ago I decided to finish the cub. I am almost finished with it now. I just have to do some sanding to it and then cover it.
here is a pic of the wing

My wife makes me build in the garage, because we have parrots, and they are rather sensitive to chemical fumes. But I figured if I can dump thousands into a hobby, I can afford a $150 torpedo heater.......

My wife made me insulate my shop out in the garage. She even helped me do it. Good thing. It was -10 here yesterday morning.
By the way------what ever happened to the nice young man who started this thread, and what was his question?

why would I need to do that? I know that its softer wood but I'm not going to be doing areobatics with it. The top middle spar is the harder wood is that not enough?

RE: Messed up my wing on a piper cub kit while building.
{update}
I'm still looking to get replacement parts for my cub, but meanwhile I'm ordering another great planes cub the same exact kit but gonna build this one as the clipped wing version.
Been busy for a short here moving things around due to my signifigant other movin in.
So I got tossed from the attic to the basement with my "toys", heh
Welp I kinda got the room started and a nice oderless kerosene heater and a dehumidifier running.
My home within a home, or shall I say within her home now.
I posted some pics of the room, not sure if it will show up on here.

knight1; phread59 makes a good point on left over balsa after the parts are removed. If you have the space, do not throw them out. If anything they are a good source of balsa that can be used, and not even on the same plane. In fact, I save so much balsa, I find it hard to throw any out. I have some pieces that are no more than 1/2 inches square. Every time I try to throw them out I think I would probably need them just after the trash was hauled off. It's called balasaitis
