If your flying a 40 size trainer, by all means get the TT46 pro over the OS40LA, and over a 46LA, the TT is much easier to tune and wont give you any problems. The 40 size engine is kind of a waste of money, when a 46 is the same size, weight, price, and you can grow more with that engine. Daz...

I had the same delema, the plane I am currently building is the sig 4 star, it says to use a size 40 for the top end on a 2 stroker. So I purchased a 40 os fx. This was hard because the 46 was 4 dollars more, put out .4 bhp more and was slightly lighter in weight. Should I trade them out?
Dont mean to interrupt.

Wreckage Ace:
If you haven't bought the 40 yet, by all means get the 46. If not, don't worry, the 40 still has plenty of power.

No Brainer - LA40 vs 46Pro
Having HAD an OS 40LA with my first trainer and having to send it back in after less than a half a gallon of fuel that was pouring out the front BUSHING, IMHO, anything is better than the 40LA.
They are weak and from my experience, unreliable.
Spend the extra bucks and go with the TT46Pro - you'll be better off in the long run.
Just my .02 worth,
Vance

Tough as nails
This is my TT pro .46 it is in it's 4th combat season, and has been subjected to total hell. It has been full power dirt dived more times that I can count. It has shucked the carb barrel set screw and sucked down the barrel spring in the intake and scored up the insides. The carb has been sheered off at least three time, and now has an old HP carb on it I found in a junk box. The muffler has been sheered off at least 4 times, and the case is drilled out and a GP .42 muffler is on it now...I think. The carb "clench" stud stripped out, so I threaded the hole and now use a "set" screw to hold it in. I've been in this hobby a long time, and have reuined my share of engines...and I have to tell you, this bad boy is by far the toughest, hardest working most reliable engine I have ever owned.. and despite everything I've put it through, it's still makes kick ***** power to be at the top of it's game in R/C combat and will be on the front lines again at the next meet.
Oh yeah...I had a OS .46LA. It was so dissapointing, I GAVE it away.

That's funny....I run TT engines and have an AMD computer. I'm very happy with both. I have almost 25 years of combined experience on my TT engines and have never had a problem. Treat them right and they'll last for a long time. My oldest are a 25 GP and a Pro 46, I bought them 8 or 9 years ago during the second season I was flying. They have been run hard and are still going hard today.

That explains a few things... Namely the lack of computing going on around here.
...
I was wondering how to start the AMD sitting in my cub.

I also vaguely remember OS having a 46 FX. I think my buddy traded his arm for it. It was a great engine.
In all truth OS engines are great. I just don't see the reason for paying $110 when you can get a quality engine of the same size for $70. I just think OS needs to re-think their pricing if they want to keep their edge.

OS vs. TT
From an instructors point of view, both engines are easy to set up, breakin and adjust for great running. For the same size and type of prop the FX engines will turn the prop about 2000 rpm faster but they cost more. Both are very reliable and I will take new students up with one of these engines on their plane before other planes with other brands of engines. If you have the extra dollars go for the FX46, if you want to save some $ for fuel ect. then get the TT PRO. Either engine will not disappoint!

It sounds like the engine was mistreated. I see a lot of youngsters get of the ground running way too lean. Was it in a crash and ingested some dirt? If the engine is taken care of, it will last and perform just as long as an OS motor.
I had a friend that got into the hobby the hobby about 2 years ago. He bought a 46 FX for his Avistar. He broke in the motor and then let the motor sit in his damp basement for 3 months without any after-run care. Yes, the engine was rusted. I took him flying without knowing the condition of the motor. The motor ran great and started to loose power. We cleaned the motor out and it still ran for a while with considerably less power until the rusted bearings finally gave out. By that time it was cheaper to buy a new motor rather than buy bearings, piston and sleeve. I still believe OS makes a great motor.
Will people admit that they haven't taken care of a motor? Nah.....
If you don't change the oil in your car and ruin the engine does it mean that the manufacturer of the car is at fault? Does it mean your neighbor's car that was taken care of and runs is a better model?
You should ask if you can see the motor in question.
1. Remove the backplate and look for rust. This will be a sign of bad engine care. Check bearing and crank. Particulates of rust (iron-oxide, is pretty abrasive) will break off and wear the piston/sleeve.
2. Inspect the piston/liner. Look for scratches. This will indicate it has ingested foreign objects.
3. Look at the color of the piston. If it is dark, the motor has been run lean for an excessive amount of time.
Normal wear on an engine will not exhibit what is listed above.
Sorry for the long reply.

Fastsky, I agree that the OS has more power. 2000 RPM is a little high. I have measured a difference of about 400 RPM with same props. 400 RPM is still a lot and would be noticeable. So, if you want more performance go with the OS.

Little photo-sensitive handheld tachometers are used.
And yeah, 2,000 is a rather unbelievable difference. I've got a 46fx, and it's average in power compared to similar engines. Would I spend the extra money for an OS again? Oh no! Gimme an Irvine!!
