Use of a trainer cord is highly recommended; it has saved many a plane and reduced greatly the number of missed heart beats due to close calls. Our club requires a trainer cord for instruction. It is something you will probably have to buy as opposed to making it yourself.

Trainer cords are cheap. Buy one. You know it will work the way it is supposed to.

If you don't use one, and you turn away from the instructor when he needs to help, the plane is lost. There are many reasons to use one, and I can't think of one reason not to use one.
