Default RE: engines?

I have a tower 46 that I want to hand launch as far as I can. I believe that the tower engines and gms are the same. This engine has been nothing but trouble. No one at the field could get the thing running right. It either leans out in midrange and dies or transition from idle to full takes way too long. I've tried everything - 3 different plugs, 3 different fuels. Everyone here says they require a longer break-in period. I knew this when I bought it and didn't mind doing the extra break-in. Well after 3 gallons of fuel, it is still lousy. From what I've read here, buying that engine is like spinning a roulette wheel. My os46 will be here tommorrow.

They are pretty reliable from what I've read here. The only complaint I've heard is lack of power due to the bushing instead of bearings in the crankshaft.

Mine runs fine, I say go with the GMS .47. THe 46la is a piece of junk IMHO. I never seen a bad GMS, but some of them need to be sealed with RTV silicone around the carb. Some other good choices would be the Tunder Tiger .46 pro and the Magnum xls .46. OS is kinda overpriced.

I don't know about the GMS, but the 46 LA is better used as a paper weight. It has no power, which is why it is so cheap.

The os, magnum, gms and the thunder tiger all have the same mounting dimentions, and are pretty close in weight. The 46la is about 1/8" narrower thanthe other engines, it is pretty light, but dosen't make that much power.

I would go with the tt. Same quality of OS, and it has a short break in time. Some of the GMS engines can take a while to break in.

Check out MinnFlyer's own review of the Evolution Power Trainer System.45 engine here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...article_id=153

I picked one up, $80 US but have only fired it up as of yet. No breakin required, and it started, idled and transitioned without any trouble.

Most .40 size planes use size 64 rubber bands, I think the SNS does as well.

You'll want to put on at least 8, and maybe as many as 12 rubber bands total.

The SNS instructions should show something about installing some sort of rubber band retainer. Usually this is just a dowel drilled though the fuse just in font of the wing LE and another one just behind the wing TE. Some SPADs use a bit of music wire bent in to a U around the bottom of the fuse, with the ends bent in to hooks for the rubber bands.

When putting on the rubber bands, it's a good idea to cross the last pair, ie, run them from front-right to back-left and vice-versa. It helps keep the bands from popping off in the air.
