I am putting together a field box for my nexstar. What power starter is easier to use the
ones that have the battery clips or the panel-ready banana plugs?

it all depends, are you putting a power panel on you field box? if you are go with the panel ready one that way you dont have to solder the banana plugs on later

Yes I will be putting a power panel in. I thought about getting a field box complete combo
from tower hobbies it comes with the deluxe power panel but the torqmaster 90 starter
that comes with it is battery clips go figure. And i was just wondering what type everyones
using.

If your flight box has the battery enclosed it will be easier to use the banana plugs. It is easy to change from the clip ons to banana plugs. As ontay mentioned, some require soldering, but some do not.

I use the tourqe master as well and I got mine from tower with the bannana plugs already on there.

here is my setup:

Tower Hobbies Deluxe power panel
Panel ready tourge master 90
Hobbico electric fuel pump
Hobbico torqmaster LC 12v 7amp starter battery
Carl Goldburg supertote
Du Bro kwik-fill fuel can fitting

and I also use a coiled fuel line that attaches to the fuel tank on the airplane to fill it up

I wondered the same thing too but I went with the banana clips but it doesn't much matter I think it would stay in better if you pull it too hard here is a pic. be sure and put some posts on the side of your box so you can charge your 12 volt batt I used wife's nail polish to paint one red ( a real pretty candy apple red by revlon )

HEY! thanks guys. Does the 12v 7 amp battery run everything? The reason why I ask is because in gitterdun's picture it looks like he is running another battery to run his electric fuel pump, and are the posts on the side of your box plug-ins? Where did you get them at? thanks

No I used the 6 volt Batt. because I Found the 6 volt Pump At a swapmeet for $ 5 bucks otherwize I would have used the 12 volt it will have plenty of juice to do it all . I have a toggle switch for my pump on the side and The post are wired directly to my 12 volt batt. ther 1/4 20 bolts they stick out far enough to get your alligator clips on it from your batt. charger [sm=lol.gif]

Its all real cool until I run out of juice in that 6 volt then Im borrowing someones hand pump

hey gitterdun thats pretty cool! I think Ill put them posts on the side of my box too! You said you have a toggle switch for the pump on the side, doesnt the power panel have a switch for your pump too? Thanks

oh ya but all i had was the 6 volt pump when I fry that pump I will buy a 12 volt pump and then I can hook it up to the power pannel it also has the switch where you can reverse the pump its just makes more sense but like I said it was 5 bucks so you know !

on my tower hobbies deluxe power panel, you can charge the starter battery through the same plugs that you hook up the starter in! that way there is no need to put an extra charge jack on your box, the cool thing is the panel is only 20 bucks!

Ive had this setup for a year and ive only charged the battery one time!!!! and I fly all the time!

probaly not, you electric pump is most likley rated at 12 V , why would you want to anyway?

Haven't bought it. On the box of the pump it says 6v to 12v. I thought of using this 8.4v battery I had lying around.

Don't have that money to go buy a bigger battery.

if you are tight on money why not just get a hand pump? they work good as well.

I just use my batt. charger I bought for my car instead of buying the charger from the hobby shop works good saved $$$$ [X(] Ps The post are just nice to have (what if).................. they only cost about a dollar to have on there

Just my own experience here...

I've owned a few electric pumps and won't buy one ever again. Every one of mine broke in less than a season. And I did follow the directions as far as making sure there wasn't fuel left in it. It's always a stripped gear or something else. I bought a good manual pump and have had it for years. Works like a charm.

Back to the original question I would go with a starter that has the battery already attached to it. Sullivan makes one that holds enough batteries to delver 14v instead of 12v and that will make alot of difference in starting. It also does away with the whole cords to the field box thing. This is a real hassle. Get a recharable glow plug charger and use a manual fuel pump.

Running your starter thru a power panel is like wattering your lawn with a soda straw. The wiring in standard power panels is puny, and won't carry the current needed to turn a large motor. Been there, done that.

As a new user it is easier to have one place for everything and go with the inserts to your box.
