Yes, people really do. There are modification kits that you can buy to make them suitable for use in aircraft. Though the purpose-designed engines are usually a bit lighter and produce a bit more power than a modified weedie.

Yes a no. Yes they can be used but No I wouldnt use it personally. They dont offer enough power to weight ratio for me. I have seen a lot of conversions and only one where I was impressed. It was a chainsaw motor (cant remember the name brand) but it was rated around 60 something CC (thats one big saw)!!! The conversion was professionally done and ended up costing more than buying a DA or 3W of the same size.
