i am in the process of building a great planes PT40 this is my first plane. a friend of mine gave me a smoking deal on a saito FA65 can anyone tell me if it is possible to put this motor in this plane it wont fit with the engine mount that came with the plane and that mount is what is used to control the front wheel for steering purposes. the motor mount that i recieved with the motor dosent have a place to mount the front wheel and is also to wide to fit into the front of the plane
any help would be great thank you in advance
Rich
ps according to the box the biggest motor for this plane is a 56 4 stroke

If thats the only engine you have to work with, it should be fine. Perhaps a bit big for a 40 size trainer, but should be fine. You'll have to buy a new engine mount with extended rails for the 4 stroke. Great planes has a 40-70 adjustable engine mount that has the front wheel capabilities. There may be others as well. Also, put most of the sevos, battery receiver towards the back as it may come out a bit nose heavy. I generally dont recommend 4 stroke for training as they generally end up crashing a bit and I hate to see this investement being lost. A cheap .40 for $50 may be the better way to begin. But if you have a good Instructor, he should be able to keep the ground from sucking up your PT40.

whzyrd, I have to agree, an inexpensive two stroke would be a better alternative. Besides the cg problems, you will probably have an issue with prop clearance. That is not a good thing on a trainer. I would save the 4 stroke for a future project. Good luck

I have an OS46LA in my PT-40. Flies the plane just fine, inverted, etc. Easy starter, and fits properly.
My opinion: shelve the Saito till the next plane. Use your building experience from the PT-40 to help you make your next plane "just right" for the Saito.

I would agree on the 40 size 2 stroke. A Thunder Tiger 40 or better yet 45 pro would work well. But I guess I will admit to being the original wierdo. My first trainer was a PT-40 with a Saito 45s. I learned with the little 4 banger. It had plenty of power for this plane. And yes I did dork it and damage the engine. I still haven't got around to sending it out and getting it repaired. I would say the 65 (which is a great engine BTW) would be way too much. And a little too heavy to get it to balance right. If you must 65 then you must. But I would go with an inexpensive 45 2 stroker and have a good time with it. Good luck whichever way you go.

thank you for all your advice im just going to use a smaller engine and save the 65 for something else it will require to many mods for it to work and it just isnt worth it on my first plane.
thank you all very much for you time and advice

If you get a Saito in the future (and they are good engines) make sure you use "after run oil" The bearings have a tendency to rust and then your engine starts to run poorly.
