Default .40/.46 engines

I'm building a fun fly plane for a .40 size engine and as this will be my first engine i don't know what is best.
Should I go for a .40 or a .46?
What engine is the best for a fun fly?
Is the thunder tiger PRO 46 any good?
I know nothing.

Yes the TT 46 pro is a good engine. A very good value for the money. Other good engines in these sizes are the OS 45 FX/AX, Irvine 46 or 39 on your funfly. Super Tiger GS45, Magnum 45XLS, EVO 45 are also good engines. Right now Quantum Models has the Magnums on sale for a good price. There are a few more but these are generally the reccomended ones. Pick any one of them and you should be ok.

I have been running a Thunder Tiger .46 PRO for more than 2 1/2 years now! I am throughly impressed with it! The OS.46 FX (if you can find one nowadays) is a great engine as well. The OS is a little more ... finicky... about the needle settings as the TT .46 PRO. As for the OS .46 AX, haven't had the oppurtunity to test one out, so I am not sure there. As for the other bradns .46, all run around the same. Stay away from the OS .46 LA unless you want an engine that wears out quickly! For the money, invest in a good quality engine from the start!

As for the 40 or 46 size, well it all depends. What airplane? What style/type flying intended? What budget? Is this going to be the last airplane you plan on putting the engine on, or do you want an engine that will transfer to other airplanes and still fly them well?

All things considered a .46 size engine will give you the most power and versatility of the size. This size engine will power most airplanes in the .40 size very well! The down side is that the .46's will burn more gas than .40's at the trade off of extra power! The .46's also tend to be a little more finicky about proper break in and needle valve adjustment than the .40's. BUT the extra power more than makes up for the down sides! I would highly reccomend a Thunder Tiger .46 PRO or the OS .46 FX for just about all .40 size airplanes!

I have been running an OS .46 AX on a Dazzler for about a month now. No problems at all. It was easy to break in and runs great. Plenty of power for that plane. For a .40 size plane I always run a .46 engine or a .56 to .72 four stroke.

Thanks,
It is a plan from nexus plans service, Very similar to a limbo dancer or cougar, but slightly bigger. It will (hopefully, without crashes) be the only plane it is put in, but possibly a low wing sports model later on. As for the price I was thinking up to about the £80 mark. I guess this means the OS 46 FX/AXs are out of the question.

If you're not in a hurry for the engine, look at the magnum .52 ($79.99 at hobbypeople). I hear good things about this engine (I love my tt.46's also).

They are currently sold out, but backorder one if you want.

I put a OS LA 46 engine on my LT 40, havent had any problems with it. If any thing, any problems are caused by my own fault.
Its been through alot, like a 50 ft full speed dive at 90 deg into the ground, nooo problem, just got a new spinner, prop, cleaned dirt out and ready to go.

I am getting a thunder tiger pro 46 due to better power and cheaper price for now for my new plane im making, it also has bearings compared to bushings
but I havent noticed any wear.

If you are willing to import, then tower hobbies have the 46 AX at $109.99. With p&p that works out at a tad over £65.00. I have used them a lot and about 75% of them come through customs with no charges.

If you do get charged then add 17.5% VAT, an import duty and post office fee. Price would still probably be sub £90.

If you don't want to take that chance, inwood models has the 46 AX for £89.00

I would most definetly go with the TT pro 46 for several reasons. Great price. You will be hard pressed to find an engine this good for that price. Second if you are new to engines the TT pro 46 is as easy as they come. Very easy to break in and they can be flown after the second tank of gas. Super reliable. Also, I wouldnt even think about a 40. The 46 engine is almost always a better value, it doesnt weigh more than a 40, it is the same size, and it provides a lot more power.

Don't even consider a .40. For just a little bit more money you get a lot more performance in a .46. I have two TT .46 Pros and they are the best bang for the buck in the .46 size. The OS engines are good to, just overpriced. If you are considering a .46 FX/AX why not spend $20.00 more and get a Webra 50. It will blow the socks off any .46 and it is in the same size range. If price is an issue go with the TT if not, skip the OS and go for the Webra. Remember, if you crash and destroy the plane, you usually still have the engine to work with for another plane so make your decision with this in mind. Down the road it could be cheaper to buy a Webra .50 and have more performance for that next plane decision. It all depends on how you want to spend your money. Don't get me wrong, OS makes excellent engines. They have probably the best fit and finish of the bunch. It is just that in the .46 size they have priced themselves out of the market and depend on customer loyalty for much of their sales. IMO the OS .46 FX/AX should be about $15 to $20 cheaper which is still more expensive than the other .46s around.
