Default my first trip to the field

hi, its rick again.

I havent gotten my plane in the mail yet, but it should be here soon enough. But i did take some advice from you guys, so i went to one of the local fields today.

The very first thing i saw when i got there was a crash.

they were having a "fun fly". what they were doing was take off, do 3 rolls, 3 loops, and 3 forward loops, then land.

well the guy that was starting when i got there, he went up, did 3 rolls, a loop, and a plane shattering crash into the ground.

he didnt seem upset at all about it. infact, the plane seemed quite fixable to me, although one of the wings was hanging off, and the coating stuff was all ripped. but when he recovered it, he ripped out the engine and the electronics and proceeded to compact it so that it would fit into the trash can better.

i wish he didnt do that. i would have been glad to take that home and fix it up. prolly would have been good practice.

there was another guy there with a sweet looking plane, it was a mustang(thats what they were calling it). he sold it to some guy he didnt even know for $50. yep i would have gone $60. especially since it had an engine and electronics already installed.

it turns out that he has like 40 planes in his basement, so some of the guys wanted his #.

i overheard his number a few times, and i couldnt get itout of my head, so i'll be giving tom a call one of these days to see if he has a decent trainer type plane that he doesnt want, and hopefully he'll have an engine for it. that would be a really good thing for me.

other than that, it was a good trip overall, i met a few guys, and now i cant wait to get my first plane, and start flying.

Default Plane crash...

Just for info, the guy that crashed his plane and then wasn't too upset probably has lots of experience and has at least a few more planes sitting in his basement. That being the case, he probably didbn't want to bother to fix this plane. Also he probably knows from experience by looking at it, if its going to take more time to fix it than its worth. The plane is actually the cheapest part when compared to the engine, servos, and electronics. If those are ok, then any crash isn't that bad unless you are getting into 1/4 scale stuff. Then thats another story. Have fun, Fast!

Good deal Az...

Did you get a chance to talk to the guys? Tell them that you're getting your first plane and that you're looking into clubs to join?

Funny you mentioned this. From my crashes, I have heard people say the could fix it and I have offered to give them the plane but usually they decline. I fly 1/4 scale stuff and I cannot build. The quality of my work is below my expectations so I don't build.

Azmuth,
I know what you mean about it being sad when people smuch, then stomp them futher.. I have a couple that had been re-kitted
and took them home and rebuilt them.. I use them for training and I don't mind messing with them..

Geistware
Anytime you smuch one and want to toss it, lemme know and I can have a friend of mine in Lawerenceville pick it up.. If I can't rebuild it, I can always use it for wood or parts..

I had a friend that just built a Dazzler ARF, he had a minor accident, and broke the firewall from the front of the plane. I had to hold him back from stepping on it and smashing the entire plane. How can people get so mad and throw tantrums like that?

glad to see you had a good time..

next time you go talk to as many people as you can..

let them know you your just starting, you getting a plane in the mail etc etc and im sure someone would be more than happy to help you out with stuff like that.

also let people know that you are into "rekit specials" next time they plant one not so bad you may get something to practive building/covering etc and may even get a usefull plane out of it.

(i just got a damaged spare wing for my super chipmunk for free this way)

I've seen and heard of people at our field throwing tanrums like that. Not that I want to c4rash but if I cant afford to take the loss if it happens I shouldn't be flying.

Default Make your contacts

Like the posts before me said, let everyone there at the flying field know you are new to RC and could use a instructor, they will put you in touch with the right guys. As far as crashed planes, I pulled a hanger 9 Extra Easy out of the trash can at the field when the guy put it in nose first. It stuck there like a arrow in the ground. Befor and after shots can be seen at the link below.

you are sooo correct, dsjbean.. I have seen this on a few occasions.. Yes, we all get gitters at times.. Yes, we all lack
confidence at times, yes, we all make stoooopid mistakes at
times, and yes, we all munch a plane every now and again..
This is a H O B B Y ,, so is to be thought of as a disposable
expendure .. So if it ain't fun fer ya, get the heck out... That
way the rest of us who are having fun creating havoc and mayhem can continue to do so..
When a new person comes to a field and sees people having
fits, think of how much he would want to particiapate in THAT,
next time you wanna go off...
