Somethin Extra Servos
#1
I tried posting this in the Radio - Engines - Servos forum, but it seems no one cares to answer, so I thought I would try here. [:@]
I am ready to choose my servos for the SE kit I have just finished. I have 3 JR537 servo's from another plane that bit the dust. Yep, I have tested the 3 and they are fine. I am debating on whether to finish out with 2 more 537's or maybe a couple of Hitec 605BB's. However, I see that these are discontinued when I look at the Tower Site. So I guess I have two questions: 1. Are the 537's enough for the SE? (I think they are, so I am just verifying.) and 2. What Hitec Servo has replaced the 605BB?
BTW: My SE is pretty standard: engine is a OS46FX, and will be using a 12X5 or 12x6 prop

I run just standard servos in my SE and fly the heck out of it. You won't have a problem with them. I don't know the hitec servos, but any standard servo will do. It is a pretty small airframe. You will like it. I run a 46 fx and an 11 X 4 prop. It is a blast.

Thanks FLYBOY
I thought the 537's would be fine, just wanted confirmation from someone that had one. I also had time to find the chart that shows prop sizes compared to engine size. I will probably back mine off to the 11X4 as well. The chart indicates that the 12x5 and 12x6 are too large for the 46fx. I still am looking for a comparable servo by Hitec so I can substute the new one for the 605BB's. I have another plane in the wings that will probably need a step above the JR537's. (Choosing Hitec mostly due to the cost.

Just noticed your prop question, which depends on the type of flying you want to do. I had an OS 50SX on mine and used an APC 11x6. Flew it nicely. Many are opting for the APC 12.25x3.75 on that same engine to get better aero/hovering abilities. I bought the prop, but put the plane in before trying it out, so I can't comment on it.

Thanks P-51B,
I did put on a larger landing gear just for this purpose. I do have some 12X6's sitting around and after the engine is broken in (it's NIB) I may move up. Thanks also for the 425 information. I thought they might be the ones, but I can't remember the torque on the 605bb's in order to make a comarison.

I tried a 12 inch prop on mine last weekend for the first time. It sucked. Had no power, no vert, no speed. You could hear that the engine wasn't turning. I put the 11 x 4 back on and had fun. 12 seemed to be too much. I used to run 10 x 6 props on the 45s. 11s are good but 12 slows it down way too much.

12x6 is ok for a K&B 48, but the OS 46 won't like it much.

Thanks all, I stopped at my LHS on the way home, bought the 2 537's, an 1100mah battery (this is my standard for now) and will use the 11X4 prop...for now.
I appreciate all the input.

I realize that you already bougt servos. But here is a suggestion anyway. I have some Hitec HS-475HB's that I am going to try. They have 60 some inches of torque. The new carbonite gear sets. But unfortunately only 1 BB. But the price is right I payed 24 bucks at my local hobbie shop. I have seen them listed at 19 mail order. Got some heavy duty Dubro servo arms and ball links. With Robart control horns and clevises. Should make a real tight set-up. good luck with your somethin extra.

Phread59 has a similar set-up to 605's... The 605 I believe had about 70 oz. @4.8V, For the price I like 645MG's but they are slow (.20?)
You DO NOT need anything other than STD servos on the SE- Yes it will fly better with digital servos but...$
I love the SE

Mike- I see that you are hooked! Welcome aboard...
The 46LA will be fine, I always say "run what you got"- I would try an 11x4 or 11x5 APC if you want lower speed, more torque- 10x6 if you want to be quicker (not common with the SE)
Cheers!

APC 11x4, only way to go with the .46 engines, I am using JR 811 digital servos with mine, lots of torque and I had them left over from my 8103 Heli package, you can pick them up for 30-35 bucks sometimes from the heli guys because they buy higher torque servos, and they are perfect for sport 40-60 planes!
