when am i ready for a cub?

im flying a trainer 60 now and do well with it, should i go to a 4*60 first? or could i handle a cub now?, im looking at the gp 80" cub arf

I think the Cub would be ok for a 2nd plane. A 4*60 wouldn't really help as a Cub trainer because it's faster and more responsive than a Cub. They both land about the same speed though(very slow). Your trainer flys more like a Cub than the 4*. Generally the bigger the Cubs are, the better they fly. The ground handlying on some Cubs is tricky but the GP Cub isn't too bad. Should be fun!

Cubs are fine as the first trainer... I have given beginners lessons using cubs for thier first flights and had no problems.
If you teach a guy to handle a Cub right off to bat... they never have problems with taildraggers. Trike gear trainers let the students be lazy about throttle management and rudder use on take-off... helping them develop bad habits that bite them when they go to a taildragger.

I bought the 80" H9 Cub as my first plane. Almost finished building it. I have been practicing on the sim for about 3 months though. I think I am ready and not really worried that much about being able to control the plane. More worried about my craftsmanship!!
The H9 is very well-designed and not a problem at all to build. I would definitely buy another H9 without hesitating. The instructions were about as good as one could ask for. The GP is right there with the H9 as far I can tell from the forum.

On that H-9 Cub.... Be absolutely certain it does not have toe-out. Toe-out will ground loop any taildragger.
Pidgen toed wheels are OK... straight wheels are OK.
If the front of the tires is wider spaced than the rear... you gonna break it.

Ground handling on a tail dragger is not that hard if you manage your power. I see these guys go out and slam the throttle on and end up all over heck. Taxi slow with full up elevator, and when you are ready for takeoff, get set on the runway straight, add just enough power to get you rolling with the stick back so the tail stays down, then as the speed picks up, add more and more throttle slowly and relax the elevator pressure as you go, slowly, not all at once and use the rudder to keep it straight. If you add the power slow, it will roll straighter. If you slam it on, its going to turn on you. Take it easy on the throttle and you won't have a problem.
