Andy,
Yub, Yub (David) hasn't soloed yet. He actually only has a couple flights to date. He did quite well, but had a very hard time seeing the plane, and its orientation when it was more than about 300 to 400 feet away. Not great for trying to learn, and kind of nerve wracking for the instructor. (me
)
He knew he needed glasses (said he could see much better when he borrowed his friend's glasses), and was supposed to be seeing an eye doctor, but I haven't heard anything more in a week or so.
I'm hoping he's able to get them soon, because I was having fun getting him started.

Hey People!
I'm sorry, these days I've been devoting a lot of time to my webpage.
I need my glasses and I don't want to try another flight until I get my glasses, but, sadly, my glass appointment is in July!!!!!
P.S. I HATE the fact that appointments always get scheduled two months later than the time you WANT to have an appointment....
P.S. I also don't like the fact that my webpage has bad textures. I made almost all of the graphics myself with the GIMP. It works on every website that I have EXCEPT for this new one.

I think it might suprize you (randy41) at how far away you actually fly.

Maybe he's training people on micro planes?
Gee, most houses are 60 to 100 ft long. 200 ft wouldn't be enough to climb to safe altitude unless you climbed in an arc.

Razor,
I'm happy for you, but you weren't there when David had to keep asking if the plane was flying level. He could not see the way the plane was oriented, which makes learning to control it impossible.
Perhaps if you already know how to fly then you can "perceive" the orientation by remembering the planes direction of travel and comparing that to what you're doing with the sticks.

Sounds like he definetely needs glasses.
This hobby played a trick on me. When I first started I SWORE I needed glasses because I thought I couldn't see the plane. I guess it was just nervousness. I went to the eye doctor and he said my eyes were fine. I was practically arguing with him. I almost got a second opinion but didn't want to fork out the cash.
This was last fall, and now I see fine. I guess it was psychological because I was so nervous maybe.... Who knows.

That a very tight radius to fly in, specially for a beginner. Sure you not flying micro planes?
45 mph = 66 ft / second
60 mph = 88 ft / second
It takes only 6 seconds at 45 mph to go 400 ft.
Subract the time to make your turn and that leaves you with about 4 seconds or less of straight and leve flight, and this is on the long leg!
Most trainers probably go around 60 mph which would take 4.5 seconds. Subract time for making a nice turn leaves you with 2 seconds or less of straight and level flight.
So if what you are saying is true, your students never fly straight, they are continuously in a turn.
Do the math....
45 mph = 66 ft / second
60 mph = 88 ft / second
It takes only 6 seconds at 45 mph to go 400 ft.

I am SURE that I need glasses because if I sit in the back row of my classroom(20+ ft), I cannot see the whiteboard. But from about 15 feet, I see everything clearly.
