Default choosing and ESC

i know that when choosing an ESC you base it on the amount of amps your motor needs, but what about volts??? do volts affect what kind of ESC to choose???
thanks

Hey

I have an electric Kyosho Spree Sports airplane and im using an E-flite esc... The only thing you have to checked is that your esc have enought amp for the motor ur using. I never checked the volts and Im sure it doesn't change something! [&:] Im sure you don't need to check voltages for an esc.
Thanks

Don't the ESCs say, eg for 6 to 12 twelve cells or whatever?

I am in the dark but I use a Wattage 15 amp on my IFO, maybe you should try posting this in the electric beginners forum.

Most ESCs are rated for a certain maximum number of cells. Having used 3S (11.1 volt) lithium polymer packs I am sorry I ever bought an ESC that was rated for 8 cells. I will never go back. If you ever intend to try the new battery technologies I would recommend getting an ESC now that is compatable. I would also recommend getting one that can handle at least 3 times the current of your present project. The weight penalty is very small and you will be able to use it with a bigger motor later.

I'd agree with davidinmi. While most ESC's will state the number of cells so you can usually just multiply cell count by 1.2, but with the new lithium cells, that's no longer true.
