Default Setting up a Magum 40 engine

Have a Magum 40 engine which I have run a about of gallon of fuel through it. I am having a problem with the transition from low throttle to high. The engine will idle very well but will not tranisition smoothly to high. This very frustrating since I am trying to learn how to land and trying to add power to go around when I screw up on my approach is getting aggravating. Any suggestions?

Okay to me it sounds like you have your low speed needle set wrong, start up your engine let it run at the lowest idle you can reliabley achieve for about a minute then try and advance it quickly if it just cuts out you are running lean so you need to richen it up a bit and if it stutters and kicks out a bit of smoke as it picks up you are too rich so lean it out a bit by turning the needle clockwise hope this helps Lee.

That's assuming it's a two needle carb of course. If it's an air bleed card you'll need to reverse those setting recommendations (clockwise for rich, counter-clockwise for lean).

Is it a two needle carb do you know? If so, follow Cougar's advice for setting the low end.

Carb that a Magnum has is one needle valve and a idle set screw. For the past hour or so I have been trying Cougars advice but no luck. Very frustrating, begining not to like Magnum's!!!![>:]

When you say idle set screw, are you talking about the idle "stop" screw?

Look closely at the throttle control horn. Is there a small recessed screw inside it? Or is it just a screw holding the control horn on? he low end needle screw is often (usually) inside that.

Otherwise, on an air bleed carb, the air bleed set screw is located on the side of the carb, and there's a tiny hole in the front of the carb body.

Dennis thank you for the advice, never would of looked in that little recess area I thought is was for the removal of the throttle slide!! Anyway played around with the engine again for about an hour and I got it pretty close not perfect yet but close!! Thank you for all the good advice. I really appriecate it!!!

No problem, we've all had to learn. Just be sure to pass it on.
