Engines are as different as the people that buy them, the thunder tiger brand is one of those that people either swear by or swear at..mostly an engine is as good as its breakin..done right it should last for years, done wrong it could lock up on the first flight.......you may want to ask in the actual engine forum for more opinions..since you are basically asking beginners here...just a thought...Rog

Thunder tiger seems to be a good engine. However for a few bucks more go with the Pro. The GP's don't have the power or from what I have seen and read the reliability and user freindlieness. These are only my opinions.

I love my TT 46 Pro. With a Tower Hobbies muffler it has all the power I need and runs like a top. I've gotten a number of compliments on it at the field.

Not that that is not a good engine...I have seen alot at the field that just ran smoothly....but like flyinrog said....some people swear by engines (like they do transmitters) and some hate certain types......but I know (and yes I swear) by OS they are very reliable if broken in properly.....I say get the extra money and pay up for a OS .61...probably will have more power too....

Adam you are going backwards. The LA is not even the equal of the TT GP 61. The TT pro is a good choice and only about 10 bucks more. Another one to look at in this price range is the Tower 61. Supposed to be a decent engine. Super Tiger 61's are cheap now. I have an older GS45 and it is a great engine. I would try the ST 61 without fear. BTW the Tower 61 is supposed to be quite the powerhouse. Good luck whichever way you go.

Please, forget about the LA's and GP's. Save your money and get a PRO or FX. I've had all 4 types and will always stick with the PRO's and FX's. Further down the road you'll want to put it in another plane, so buy a good engine.

Don't get too caught up in the recommendations toward one brand or another. In the past OS was definitely the standard but there are many good competitors nowadays which often make the OS equivalent look overpriced. Like others have said, you will get more bang for the buck if you get a ball-bearing supported engine so I would suggest making that your focus.
I have two Thunder Tiger .46 Pros and love them both. The .61 Pro should be every bit as good but I believe there are other .60+ size two strokes that are lighter than this particular Thunder Tiger. I have read many good reports on the Tower .75 and it weighs in about 3 oz. lighter than the TT .61 Pro (ball bearing) engine and slightly lighter than the OS .61. For the price it is probably the best bang for the buck. I suggest doing a search on this engine to find out more.
Just be sure to run it rich for a while and don't push it too hard and it should break in fine and give you many years of service if treated right.

Buy the TT Pro. I used to be an "OS man", but the TT Pro series are every bit as good and are usefully cheaper. I have five TT Pro series engines & every one is a winner. Don't buy an OS LA series engine -- ever.

That's what I'm starting to believe. I first bought a tower hobbies engine that gave me fits. I vowed to never again get a cheap engine. I bought OS engines. They run fine and I've never had any problem with them, but so does the evolution and TT pro engines and others from what I've read on this site. I think next time, I will get me a TT pro or evolution.

I have a Mecoa 46 in my trainer that has a semi-symetrical wing airfoil, it has as much power as the OS 46
fx. i fly most of the time at <2/3 throttle. The engine is a great buy directly from Mecoa, specially if you
take advantage of their t rade-in offer. The parts are made in China and assembled by Mecoa in California.
I have a Mecoa .28 .46 and.61 king Cobra. Break them in PROPERLY and they are SUPER. and the
stock mufflers work well and are decently quiet. They are the best buy for a moderate price.

I also have the TT Pro .61. It's been great so far. I've had it for a couple of months now and it runs fine and idles very well. At first, I had some trouble getting the low end, idle mix adjusted right. It was set too lean from the factory- for some reason I assumed it would be set on the rich side to begin with. When I richened up the bottom end, it has run perfectly ever since.

gene2586 -- I also have a MECOA .46 Tomcat, in addition to 5 TT .46 Pros. There is absolutely no comparison. All five TT's routinely tach @ ~13,200 rpm with an APC 11-6 prop on 10% nitro, while the MECOA has never exceeded 12,400 with the same setup, despite very carefull break-in (which was long & painfull with the MECOA). The TT's start more easily (single flip every time), idle more slowly & reliably, & transition much more cleanly.
The MECOA is not much cheaper than the TT Pro, but while it works acceptably well (I still have it), it is not nearly the engine that the TT Pro is.
