Hey Guys,
The avistar has been a great plane but I am ready to upgrade the 40 size motor to a .46 size motor. Can you guys recommend a nice .46 motor that will also be great for future planes. I also am looking for a second plane that is RTF or practically ready to fly.

NICE VERTICAL PERFORMANCE? DEPENDS ON HOW HEAVY YOUR PLANE IS AND WHAT TYPE OF PLANE YOU HAVE. IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT PLANE YOU SHOULD GET PRETTY GOOD VERTICAL PERFORMANCE BECAUSE THESE ENGINES, IF YOU HAVE THEM TUNED RIGHT, ARE VERY POWERFUL. I GOT MINE FROM MY LOCAL HOBBY SHOP FOR $110 DOLLARS PLUS TAX. HOPE I HELPED, GARY.

I've got two, 1 OS40la & 1 OS 46fx, they are both great flyers. The airframe with the 46 has been put through the drill of running out of altitude, air speed, and ideas at the same time and is somewhat heaver, thus the larger engine, plus I had a new one. I still have a problem getting the engine to transfer from idle to additional throttle without stopping but I WILL fix that one way or the other! I have found that a 45 cal. slug thru an uncorroprative engine prevents it from giving me futher problems. So far it has not been necessary on OS engines but I let them watch what happens to those who choose to not corrparate! Maybe it works, who knows what goes on in those !@!#@#$%%^ engines minds'HI HI.
Try it and fly it boy, you will find weak arguments against results.
Please excuse the spelling but I am from TEXAS.

And of course the OS and more, all good engines, all with differant plus's and minus's. Do your research and chose the one thats right for you, don't trust the manufactures or mags. I would do a side by side comparison here on RCU. And do some searches on the engine forum.

If you have a LHS check them out.. A lot of them will match prices
if you ask them about it.. I used Tower hobbies(Click on ad above)
since my LHS is 100 miles away.. Fellow club members...
I just picked up a OS 46FX from ebay for $85.. I've "yet" to have a
problem on ebay.. But I do email seller before bidding and get their
phone number and call them.. If they won't give you there number
forget it.. But you have to be Careful... A choice only you can make..
Your Avistar will have good power with the bearing 46.. But don't get
to carried away with hi speed maneuvers.. easy to do with more power
And planes like to fly in there flight envelope, Though the Avistar with
take a lot.. Good luck and have fun!

Do you have the Avistar Select version? If you go with a bigger engine, make sure the main wing has been epoxied together and not just relying on those little metal straps (used on the Select version). With more power comes more stress on the plane and those straps are barely OK with the .40LA.

Left out Super Tigre 51. Price not bad and strong runner.
I addition to the permanent wing joining, make sure you add 1 or 2 rubber bands to each side. With the bigger motor, you'll see higher speeds and therefore higher flight loads. A few extra bands will prevent any in flight emergencies.

There are a number of Avistars in our club with OS.46 FXs & TT.46 Pros. Both engines make the Avistar a major entertainment piece -- you wont get bored with either of those combinations for quite a while, especially if you elininate the dihedral & convert it to a tail dragger.

I left out that I fly my Avistar with a Magnum 46XL. Also very spirited performance, but its slightly short on vertical performance that you seem to want.

The Super Tiger GS-45 is a good runner and lately as cheap as they come. The TT would probably be darn near a drop in. They are good engines as well. There are several good engines not on your list. Irvine, Enya,MVVS and Webra are all good engines as well. If performance is paramount I would go with MVVS. If durability is paramount I would choose Irvine or Enya. If cost is the deciding factor I would coose ST or TT. Good luck with whichever engine you end up with.

I wanted to say thanks for all the responses. I already epoxied my wing halves and fiberglassed it per the recommendations of a club member. I was doing split s's one day and he came over and told me that the bolts will not hold and to epoxy and fiberglass so that is what I did. I will look into the motors that all of you guys recommended. After this I will go to a low wing trainer. Any recommendations has far has a low wing trainer that is either RTF or ARF.
