The larger battery will give more engine starts per charge. If you are using a field charger or a power panel, you really need the larger battery, due to the power demands of those devices.
The 4.5 amp is OK for just running a starter and fuel pump for a .40 size trainer. Add an electric fuel pump and anything else... get a bigger battery. The 4.5 amp will give about 6 difficult starts (an easy start... takes very little power.) and fills for your .46's 8 to 12 oz tank, then it'll get sluggish operating the starter.
the 12 amp will last 3 times as long... and has a bit less internal resistance, giving a little more power to the starter when the battery is nearing end of useful charge. (the last useful start will be easier.)
