Default Super Sportster

How does the Super Sportster wing attach to the fuse? And is it comparable to the 4* in durability & contruction quality?

Wing bolts at the rear and a "dowel" arrangement at the front.

Yes, durability is similar.

Actually, my Super sportster 60 uses 4 wing bolts with no dowl. As others mentioned, the durability would be similar to the four star, but the super sportster is a much more capable airplane IMO.

If I hadn't been in such a hurry this morning, I too would have said that overall, the Sportster is a better aircraft. Penetrates wind better, performs better aerobatics, doesn't have pitch coupled to rudder like the 4*....

If you want to save some money check out the WM Sky Raider II. I have one (actually 2, bought one for spare). Its not that pretty to look at but it flies great and is cheap, only $70 for the ARF.

The only thing I don't like about the super sportster is the the trim scheme. I don' t go for the rainbow colors. I'm down to my last few hours of debating between the 4* and the SS. I'm going to order one of them this evening. And the only thing slowing the process is the damn trim scheme on the SS.

I thought I'd pipe in... I have a 4*60 Mag 91 4c powered.. I flew a members
SS.. Now I did not push the SS as my 4*.. But I thought they where pretty
much the same.. I must admit when I flew the SS, there was no wind to
speak of,, So I can't say which is better... But they have to be very close!!
My mag is now keeping the muffler/piping on:-) (after I was sent a new
smogged engine, breather to carb. inlet), But I did change the prop to a
14x4w instead of 14x6 It hovers really easy, it won't pull out, but it;ll hang
almost forever.. And now that I added R-E mix K.E.'s can be done for as long
as I want to do them.. It won't do a K.E. loop but that's the way it goes... My
landing has gotten a little... Well not as good as it use to be.. But I moved the
C.G. back to 4&9/16" so it does make it a little touchy...
Now their both what I would say slow flyers... So take your pick, I think both
will treat you well for your next level of learning...

There are a couple of differences between the 4* and the Sportster that I've noticed. (I own and fly both, and have maidened and trimmed a number of others.)

The 4* is lighter and won't penetrate the wind as well (it gets tossed around a little more), it also has some "down" pitch coupled to rudder inputs which make knife edge harder. The SS lands a bit faster becasue of the cleaner design (less drag), and flys a little faster with the same engine prop as a result.

The SS also looks a LOT nicer than the 4*, unless you hate the trim scheme of course.

I have a super sportster that I just completed. I opted for the kit so I could make my own trim scheme. I haven't flown mine yet but I flew a friends, it flies real nice and looks really nice in the air. You could always remove the covering and recover it.

Now Dennis.... "a lot nicer than the 4*???????????????
Now come on.... Maybe it's because I can't see the red ARF as good,
But I kind of like the 4*shape better... But I guess that's a personal
preference... They both kind of look good:-) On the knife edge.. I
know it takes a bit of up on mine, but now that I have it tuned in it's
a blast... Mine pulls towards the belly.. So I have about 15% up and
she works great.. I got it to do a half a loop with power:-) I keep
learning but the fuel cost is taking away from my "other plane savings"
So much to learn and so much to buy.... So is life.. But it's fun!!

bodypilot, the trim scheme isn't really bad in person....at least I don't think so.

I'd have to vote that my 4-star 40 is more capable then my SS 40.....but of course, my 4-star has 5/8" added to each control surface.

i like the 4* better becuase of the aluminum landing gear
modified the SS to be the same..i don't have luck with the
wire landing gear blocks on the wing.
but if the aluminum rips from the fuse..it'll puncher the wing.
wire gears won't do that... but the block might crack.

SS lands a little hotter than the 4*.

i modified a lot of my air ship..
i'm not sure if the diehedral is a factor to why the 4* pitch toward
the gear if ruuder is apply.
i extend and make the rudder to the 4* to make it look like a CAP's
i modified the .40 * verticle stab to have a stock at the TE run the full length
to the bottom of the fuselage..like most other kits such as the .60 4*
i belive by the verticle stab just setting on top of the tail stab would
be weak and flexing can occur when rudder is apply.
i havn't tried lowering the tail stab yet.
i like the way my 4* is set up.. mine pitch a little during a kinfe edge
but i correct it with my thumb.

the SS looks nicer...sheeted or D construction makes for a truer air foil,
but harder to repair and a heaver wing of course.

while the nose of the 4* dosen't look as slick..it's so much easier to have
access to the engine area ....lets say if one of the engine mount screws
came loose..i can easily install a nut to the bottom of the mount at the field.
an SS..i would have to try to install a larger screw or drill a larger hole at home.

the 4* has a weak piont right behind the wing's TE former becuase of the
lighten holes..the SS dosen't have this problem

Well, after all the debating. I went with the 4*. Just like everyone else at my club. [:'(] The trim scheme, the harder to access engine, and the landing gear scared me away from the SS. I'm sure I'll be happy with the 4*. I can't wait. It's the 40 size, and I bought the Thunder Tiger Pro .46. It should be fun. How does the ARF go together? Pretty easy? I've never assembled a plane. But I'm pretty mechanically inclined, so I don't think it'll be a problem. I ordered some thin CA, thick CA, 5 minute epoxy, and some 1/2" foam for the electronics. Can you think of anything else I might need? Wish me luck! Thanks for all the comments.

get some 30 minute epoxy. Do not glue on the stabs, or glue the wing halves together with 5 minute.

You'll be very happy with the 4*, it IS a great plane. I fly mine often and always enjoy it, and Leftnut, I too correct for the rudder pitch by adding up. You HAVE to.

As far as the engine access, I don't think there's all that much difference between the two, but I've never had to replace an engine bolt either. The landing gear? I didn't install the stock gear on my most recent SS, I immediately installed "Dural" type aluminum gear under the fuse.

30 min. epoxy is best for hi stress areas.. Wing, tail feathers. Plus
it gives you more working time before setting up.. Some may say
5 min. is fine??? But I'll give up a little bit of weight to get added
strength on those areas.. Don't forget to test fit and adjust all
before epoxing...
