Good engine brands/types
#1
Hello. Fairly new to r/c and need some input on some good .15-.45 2 stroke engines in the middle-price field. I have a good deal of older engines (Enyas .09, .15, .29, .35, .45 and Veco .19, .45, O.S. .25 and .30) but these are mostly engines from the eighties and while operational obviously probably a bit low on power and high on weight compared to their newer counterparts. Thoughts?

Good god I keep pushing the wrong damn buttins. I will answer for the 3rd time (big arthritic fingers). There is nothing wrong with your engines. The Enya's are still in the thick of things as far as power goes. They still can hold thier own with today's engines. The Vecco's are decent sport engines. There is nothing wrong with them. If your engines are in good shape there really is no need to buy new ones.
Having said that here are some good ones:
MVVS,Enya,OS,Thunder Tiger,Supertiger,Irvine,Evolution,Magnum,Saito,YS, and Webra.
This is by no means a complete list. It is just a list of proven performers that are powerful, reliable and trouble free.

Thanks for the tips. It's reassuring that the oldies are still goodies.
I guess internal combustion 2 stroke engines don't progress as fast as I thought they did.
As for Saito that you mentioned I didn't realize they made anything but 4 strokes? How do I know...because I have a nice old Saito FA30 4 stroke that I'm saving for that special project. As for Enya I didn't think the company was still active as I haven't seen any new Enya engines anywhere and same for Veco.
This might be just me but I find veco's to be very heavy (maybe because both of mine are ball bearinged while my other engines are bushinged) for their size but built like tanks. The two Veco's I have (.19 and .45 are VERY heavy).

Lots of good engines. Its hard to find a bad one really, but you probably want to stay away from like the LA series, its more of a lower powered sport engine. The FX .46 runs great, the super tigre runs awsome too. Tower engines are supposed to be pretty good. Many here run them. I have had great success with thunder tiger too. Magnums have been pretty good, and the old irvine engines were fairly strong too.
Its hard to get a bad engine any more, just depends on the power you want.

I have recently experienced the OS .46AX. It is by far the smoothest running, best transitioning, lowest idling, most powerful .46 I have personally flown. Its in a 65" GP cessna 182 and it flat screams. What a nice engine. I think you cant really go wrong with OS as long as it isnt an "LA"series engine. Even the LAs are ok, they just dont last very long..... I have seen a lot of the TT engines, they are tricky to tune but once you get it right they run like a top.

BigNed -- interesting comment about the TT's being tricky to tune. My personal experience has been entirely opposite to yours -- I find the OS FX, FXi & AX engines notably trickier to tune than the TT's -- that's why I sold my OS engines & replaced them with TT's.
I'm glad that we have so many good choices out there.
