When I decided to get back into model planes after moving to a new area, I did a web search for my area. I found one club in the area on the internet, then another. After chatting with a couple members, I was given information about clubs on my side of town. The rest is history. AMA is a pretty good start, most clubs are affiliated with it, but usually the more active clubs are known to the local police departments, airport managers and so on. Hope this gives you some clues, where and how to look. Local hobby shops definitely will know too.

Ditto bubbagates re:hobbystores. There's a real nice field in Gretna, not terribly far from you. Don't remember the club's name, went to a SSWB fly-in there in Sept.

OOPS, I was thinking of South Boston. Yeah, you're a bit further from Gretna. Sorry, I don't know af any places near there unless you go toward Roanoke Rapids or beyond.

...and if you plugged in your zip code, you'd get this list of clubs...

Doesn't look like there are many close to you... so I guess that's why you gave up on AMA!
