i have a UCD with a Satio .82 that i like alot, it was my second plane too. I don't know anything about the Giles but what engine do you plan on using because that will make a big difference on the performance of the plane.

A guy in my clubs got a giles for his 2nd plane and it is very hot. He has a hard time to control it don't know about your other choice though.

A stik would be a good choice for a second plane. Several manufactures have their own versions. Great Planes has a Big Stik and Hanger 9 has an Ultra Stik. All good second planes.

Also, the Goldberg Tiger II is a good second plane...

Nix on either of your choices. Get a 4* 40, or if you still want a trike, a W-M SS 40 or the T-34. All three are fairly capable aerobatic planes that are still forgiving.

Depending on how your flying and on both of your choices, I would
say the UCD.. It's aerobatic and on low rates an eaiser flyer.. The Giles
can be a little snappy under some conditions... If you aren't real
comfortable in the way your flying I would second the 4* planes.. They
will let you do a lot more, and a great flyer and keeper, Yet still be just
as easy to fly and land as your trainer.. My second plane is the 4*60/
Mag 91 4c and I really like her.. I can do the basic aerobatics.. I can
hover it pretty good and my knife edges don't look all that bad and
when it's time to land she just grease's in and makes me look better
than I am:-)

World Models makes the Super Sports 40 and the T-34, both of which are beautiful flying planes. My second plane was the Ultra Stick 40 with an OS 46AX. Very easy to fly, aerobatic and its flaps keep it entertaining. I still enjoy it today.

I second the vote for the World Models Supersport 40 or T-34. These are planes that are not only very docile, they can grow with the pilot. They also build very easily and the trike gear allows fantastic handling even in heavy winds where taildraggers tend to get blown around (all your cub owners know what "around" means :-)

I have just ordered my second Airplane I went for a Sig 4 * 60 and have also ordered a Super Tigre G-90 to make it fly...

I have gone for a kit instead of an ARF so its my first build too...

I think the two Airplanes you have mentioned, according to what my instructors have said, may be a bit too much for a second Airplane...

I have been told the Somethin' Extra by Sig is pretty cool too...

I chose the World Models Sky Raider Mach 2 for my second plane. Not because it's great looking but because at $70 it's great value for your money, it flies very well and I'm not afraid of taking chances given the low investment. I moved my engine and radio equipment from my trainer so no extra money was spent.

At the same time, I'm building a SIG SE and a GP Venus 40. I just wanted to get some practice on the Sky Raider first so that I'm less likely to mess up those planes.

ahh yes. the world models skyraider is an amazingly easy to fly low wing tail dragger. it floats like its a feather but still can go quick at WOT. that is a pretty good suggestion too. the only thing i found with the plane is that it just doesn't feel as solid as other world model kits. i think you'd fly it for a year and buy something else. a super sport or a t34 is something that you can keep forever.

I would recomend the Rambler 45 by world models it looks great and flies great. I got this plane as my second plane and I just love it.

I don't think your'e gonna be disspointed with your 4*. I've seen a few fly, (never flown one myself) and they look like very capable, honest airplanes. The MAIN reason I didn't get one for my second plane is I didn't like the way the .40 size looks. Pretty shoddy reason to pass on such a beloved airplane, eh? Plus it was a little more expensive than the Super Sports I wound up with. I will say this, I don't think Sig has ever made a bad airplane, very hard to go wrong with one of their products.

Sure the black horse super air is a great flier but it will death spiral in a second if you get it too slow. I vote for the 4*. Chop a bay off each wing, install dual servos for the ailerons and you are good to go. Mine snaps faster than my Sig SE and with a OS 46FX with a 11x6 prop she flies like a bat out of.....well you get the point.

I guess I'll come in here and say something about a second plane.

I will have to vote for a Sig Somethin' Extra. I just say this because it's such a great plane. And the best thing is, among others, is if you have alot of time then you can get the kit and build it yourself. Or, if you just want to go out flying, then you can get the ARF and if you have all the equipment ready, can be flying in about 5 hours if you just work on it. I got the ARF last Christmas, and by January 1st, I had everything complete except for the engine and servo installation. And that onliy took me about 1 hour when I got everything.

As you can see on my signature, I am using a OS .46 AX with a APC 12.25x3.75 with will easily hover. It doesn't have much of a pull out, but it will hover, and i'm getting better at it everytime I go.

(BTW, I have also flown a U-Can-Do (UCD) 60, and it is great. If you have low throws on everything, then it's a very easy flying plane. But make them higher, and you will have a blast as you progress. The same goes for the Somethin' Extra

I agree with the Avistar -- converted to a taildragger & stuffed with a TT .46 pro, or .46 FX/AX. An inexpensive & serious aerobatic flying machine that has docile landing characteristics. Makes a great float plane as well.

I guess that wouldn't be a bad idea. You already have the plane, and just make it a taildragger.

Although I do agree, I suggest you get a true "second" plane like the ones described. If you are on a budget, then the Avistar is a great plane to have.

I have flown most of the planes mentioned here and the 4* and the UCD 40 would be my two choices. The 4* is a good plane and flies well but to me its a antiquated and old looking design although its a good flyer. I personally prefer the more comtemporary 3D style planes like the UCD and Flip 3D if you are judging on looks.

However,
The UCD 40 size with a YS 63 is one of the sweetest and most enjoyable combinations I have flown. On low rates its is extremely docile and forgiving and it will glide in on landing approach better than any airplane I have flown and that includes 2M pattern planes, trainers. All of them. Only problem is that its a 3D type plane and although it is all but impossible to stall it doesnt like to fly in a straight line for long. If it has any forward motion at all, even the slightest bit it wont tip stall. IT tracks pretty well, but its not a pattern plane. Personally I think it blows the rest of them out of the water because of its docile flight and landing characteristics on low rates and potential to be a pretty solid 3D plane when you crank the throws up.

If you havent flown and landed a 40 size UCD on a calm day you havent lived. Its the most fun plane to touch and go I have ever flown.

Unless you have spent a little time with this plane you cant judge it, this is most definitely an excellent 2nd plane if not fundamentally the best there is for the performance you would expect out of a 2nd plane.
