Default Hobbico Superstar EP with brushless

I would like to go Brushless on my EP , note this is the EP with aleons. What brushless setup should i use ? whats the normal flight time with Brushless ?
Local hobby store told me 45 minuites but im very iffy on that !

If anyone can help please reply , tired of 5 minuite flights on a plane thats so fun to fly !!

Thanks !

I would look at the equivelent of a Speed 600 motor in a brushless.

Be advised that you will also need to change the ESC ($$$) and if you want the "45 minute" flights you WILL NEED to go with LIPO batteries and charger ($$$$$$).

You SHOULD be able to get away with a 2s2p or 2s3p (4000 - 6000 mah ). These should provide the flight times you want.

The motor and ESC will depend on whether you are going direct drive or geared. The geared will provide a lot more flexability on motor size and prop size/pitch.

Very rough guess on cost is going to be in the $350 - $500 range for the upgrade.

If you get MotoCalc or ElictriCalc you can play "what if" with various motors, gearbox, props to see what will work best for you. MotoCalc has a free D/L that is good for 30 days.

Hope this is some help.

Thanks for the reply ~ I will need to think about this ! my main problem now is that if i have a ough landing at all my shaft bends on the electic motor .....

Brushless setups are more efficient, but not 5min --> 45min worth. As Campy said, you'd also need LiPos. Of course, you can use LiPos with your current motor and see a big increase in run time just from that. Take it one step at a time, and spread the $$$ out.

Is your current setup direct drive or geared? Just going to a geared setup can increase run time, as you can use a more efficient prop at a lower RPM.

The trick to avoiding bending the motor shaft is to try avoid those 1 point landings . I don't think a brushless setup is going to be any less bendable.

disclaimer: I'm not an electric flight expert. I have done a little of it, and some research as I plan to get more in to it, but there are lots of guys who know a lot more than I do, that's for sure.

By going to a geared setup you will minimize the chances of bending the shaft on the motor and it will also allow you to run a more efficient prop.

As Montague said, just the LIPOs alone will increase your run time. You should be saving weight on the pack while increasing the mah.

As a precaution/word of advice, I strongly suggest upgrading the ESC if you go to LIPO and stay with the brushed motor. Get an ESC that has a programable voltage shut off so you don't over discharge the LIPO. I do know Castle makes them (definitely for brushless), however, I don't know who else.

For details, you should check out the electric forums.

Lipos are a bit more expensive, and you MUST HAVE a charger designed for them. If you use a Nicad charger on Lipos, you can damage the pack, or even have it catch fire. The cells are "safe" if used correctly, but can't be abused the way we tend to abuse nicads and nimh cells.

But the capacity for a given weight is amazing.
