If both are on the shelf when you're ready to buy, choose the one that costs less.
If only one is in stock, choose it.
If both are available and are the same price, get the Thunder Tiger. Not because it's "better," but because the needle valve is angled slightly back. This keeps your fingers slightly farther away from the prop when you're tuning

As much as I like Supertigre engines, I personally thought an LA .40 was more than enough for the Avistar, especially if you're just starting out. The plane balances perfectly with the LA, with a ST you'll have to move the batteries behind the radio compartment. I re-learned on an avistar with the LA, it was perfect, and I never thought the plane was underpowered. But I bought a S-T GS 40, and down the road a way I mounted it. Not screamingly fast, but definetly more vertical.....

I fly mine with an OS 46FX. Gobs of power and is very reliable. Got mine from a Club Member who moved up to gassers for less than $25.00, new still in the box..........never know what you might find at your local Club!

Maybe its just been at our field but the Thunder Tiger Pros and the OS Fx or the newer AX series have all been excellent. Easy to adjust and gobs of useable power. The Super Tigers have been very tricky to adjust. You spend 5 minutes tinkering, refuel, take off, fly for a minute and then the engine still quits! Happens time and time again. Almost all the ST engine owners have switched over to OS. Now they spend their time flying instead of tinkering. The carb barrel also doesn't turn smoothly right from the factory and a lot of them have suddenly suddenly jamed in 1 position. I have found other brands that also do this. I had a WM Tiger Shark 75 carb jam on me. I could barely get the barrel out of the housing to fix it. Machined it smooth and it has been a good engine. Now I check all my new engines and if it turns rough I take the barrel out and machine it smooth before installing it in the plane. The OS, and Thunder Tigers carbs have all been good right out of the box. I just bought an ASP Super Series 52 and the carb barrel turns smooth on that one as well. Haven't had a chance to try the engine out as yet so won't comment on that.[8D]

I put an OS .50 SX in mine... I figured I 'd spend the $$ up front and get a good running, high quality, high power engine that I could use in my subsequent planes. It's flying it's third plane and still runs great! Having all that power on tap in the Avistar was nice when I had to abort landings at the last minute when I was beginning to fly...

Of the two listed choices -- TT Pro is the one. It runs like a Swiss watch right out of the box, & has a ton of power as well.
