I will be ordering my 4 star sometime this week. I was going to keep it a secret, but i can't. haha
anyways refer to the pic and tell me what i don't/do need to buy. This is just the first group of things for biulding it. I also am ordering a bigger gas tank than they say to 10 instead of 8, because i will be puting a .50-.60 on this plane. So just critique my order. All glue and epoxies will be bought at the craft store. And the colors will be those of the Auburn Tigers. So tell me what else to buy.
One more thing, the landing gear is for my rebiuld right now [:@]

I will make a couple of suggestions.
1. Also get a trim iron. They come in VERY handy.
2. If the budget allows, get Coverite irons instead of the Tower irons. The Coverite irons are a lot easier to adjust the temperature on and they hold the temperature substantially closer than other irons.
3. I STRONGLY suggest using Ultracote instead of Monokote. It seems from various reports on this site (and my own experience) that the quality of Monokote has really gone downhill the past couple of years. You will also find Ultracote a lot easier to use, especially if you are new to covering.

Hmm, was just wondering if you have seen a 4* fly?!? The one you have on your list is the 40 size. I flew one with an 46FX on it and it was very fast. Unles you are looking for serious speed and think you can handle it, I would rethink putting a 60 on that plane! Also I use 10 oz. fuel tanks for my 46 engines. With a 60 on the front from my experience, you are going to have fairly short flights with just a 10 oz. fuel tank. I don't see the advantage of going with a 60. The plane is small and light, you could end up ripping the wings off. [X(]

there ha go dissin all over my favorite iron
i could see a good strong 40 or a mid 50 but i woudlent consider a 60 unless you were willing to start making structural changes to the plane :-D. i also disagree with campy, i think that monokote is still very good and i dont see the need to spend more money on the pretty plack irons instead of the tower irons... though i do tink that in the FUTURE you will need a trim iron i highly doubt you will need it on this plane with virtualy no compound curves...

Personally, I'd hold off on the fuel tank right now. One thing I've figured out from building kits is that you never know exactly what kind of space you'll have for sure (for a tank) until you get it finished. I'd get the thing built, and then get the larges tank that will physically fit in the alloted space. 8 oz might be the biggest, or you might be able to get a 10 in there, but it might have to be a different shape than the one you're buying. Make sense? Best to take the plane to the LHS (again, swallow pride) and fit some tanks in there after you're done, if you're not completely sure about what will or won't fit.

I am really new at this -- but this is the beginners forum...
If you want to use a 60 engine why not consider the Four Star 60? I am building it as my first kit and putting a OS 61fx in it. It seams like the obvious choice??
Not being critical I am just curiuous of why put 60 engine on a 40 airframe when the same airplane is available in a sixty size.
Standard fuel tank is a 12oz but some people are uping that to 14/16 oz. Certainly would give you longer flight times.

Gottcha---- Didn't think about the "need for speed"
--- I am still trying to keep up with my Rascal 40-- I would be in big trouble if I had any more power. I soloed for the first time 3 weeks ago and still feel a sense relief after each and every landing.
Thanks.

I have a 4 Star 40 with a 46FX on the front end. It (the airplane) is nearing retirement as it is getting quite worn and is need of recovering (at least!). A 46FX is plenty of power for it.... you can fly around all day at half throttle or less. I think anything too much larger might be asking for trouble... but hey, that's just my opinion.
If I can make one suggestion,...do a search or two on the forum for possible mods/changes/enhancements/improvements before you start working. The mods I made were to get a Sullivan tail wheel mount (instead of the stock unit), some tri stock on the vertical stab and dual aileron servos. The one mod I wish I'd made was to replace the landing gear mounting nuts with larger nuts and use nylon bolts to hold the gear on.
Have fun with it, it's a nice flying airplane!

I will stick with monokote. I will not put such a big engine on it. Maybe a 51 as i planned in the first place. I am glad you guys pointed that out for me. I will still be buying various things from the LHS and will add the tank to that list.
Thanks for the comments.

I know you like the stuff but use CA instead of the Gorilla Glue. I like ZAP and ZAP+. Remember the local hardware store isn't used to gluing stuff that will be exposed to Nitro and our various oils. ZAP is also cheaper at Tower than LHS I'm sure, it is here. Same can be said for a good 15+ min epoxy for the firewall and landing gear mounts. I also use Tite Bond II for fuse doublers and some other locations where speed is not important. I know your budget is limited but think about it.
Your choice, of course
