When you want to fuel proof a fuselgae what is the ratio for Epoxy to Thinner? What type of thinning agent can I use? Is dope worth it, or is thinned epoxy just as good?

I did the firewall and fuel tank compartment on my LT-40 ARF with cheap Bondo Epoxy (from the local Autozone store).
After mixing up a sample and painting some wood with it, I could see there was no need to thin it out.
It came out fine and cleans up real well after flying.

This may be a dumb question, but is that stuff fuel-proof?

I tested it with some glow fuel (on the stick I painted) before I used it.

Since it's used to repair cars, I figured it had to be at least un-leaded gas proof.

Anyways, I've been cleaning the glow fuel/gunk off the firewall (and cheeks) all year and the finish is still like glass. (Didn't get tacky).

Mix epoxy with alcohol it works great and is very fuel proof. I run 30% in a couple of my planes and have had no problems. Add just enough alcohol to make it brushable. I like to use 30 min epoxy so I don't have to rush.

I do the same as rc-sport,the amount of alcohol can be varied,so can the timed epoxy, if you need color just add in some cake color,even used iodine for color once.

Dope is a fuel-proof paint that SIG makes. You can look at it at www.sigmfg.com at the Sig Catalog link, then to the covering/finishings link . I think that there are other manufactures that make dope paints, but I haven't looked into it much. My grandfather, and many "older" modelers used silk cloth and dope to cover their model airplanes way back when, before monokote. Some people still use it today.
