From: , MD,
I got to see my brother maiden his Phoenix Extra 300S this weekend. We had a couple of issues getting it together and running smoothly, but he said everything was well worth it. All the guys at the field were really impressed by the quality of the ARF and its performance. I'll admit I was a little nervous since it was his second plane, but he was adamant that he could handle it, and he sure did. We have some pictures, but unfortunately we both had to rush off in a hurry and left them on the camera. I'll try to get some posted once he's back from the field. We both recommend the plane: it's an easy build, looks stunning, and flies rock solid.
Does anyone else fly Phoenix aircraft? Do they all perform great?

Here's a picture of the first flight of the Extra 300S (from about a month ago). Unfortunately the others were mostly blurred and it hasn't been up since...

There are two guys that I know of in my club that have them. They seem to be
good quality and are excellent flyier as well as acrobats. The club pres makes the
thing tumble like you wouldnt believe.

That's good to hear that it fly's nice. I have been trying to find some footage of it online but couldn't find any. So I guess I will have to take everyones word for it. No problems putting it together I hope.....like nothing needs to be adjusted, things like that?

The plane went together very smoothly. There were just two slight bumps in the process: 1) cutting the cowling (of course) and 2) Installing the control system for the rudder and elevator (it took both of us). I may have some videos from the last time we flew. I'll look later this evening.
Watch_ur_6,
Yes the engine is side mounted.
All in all this is an amazing plane. I think we're going to add the Sukoi to the fleet very soon!

I got my plane last Friday and built it by that Monday. It went together pretty well. I was pretty amazed. I took my time with it and it looks really nice. I was surprised about the covering. Sometimes ARF's come with the covering being loose in some areas, but not this one. I just hope it fly's as good as it looks. I put an O.S. .46 into it. We'll see what happens.
I agree with the rudder/elevator control rods.....pain in the butt to get just right but I did it with a little sweet talk'n. It balanced really good to....so far I am happy with this 300S. Fun Build.......

You're going to love it. I've flown my brother's a couple of times and its a great plane. *I* think his landings are a little fast, but he claims it will stall otherwise. I would recommend that you take a few minutes on your maiden to get an idea of the low speed envelope for the plane. Other than that, be ready for a good time!

That's my plan to take it slow and see what it will do during my first flight. I flew gliders and combat gliders for a while now so I have some knowlege and experience behind my belt. So when it comes to moveing the stick gental on landings, that's in my ballfield. But anyhow I can't wait for Saturday. Hopefully the weather is nice. One more question.....how is the .46 eng for this? That is all I have for it so I hope it flys good. I am not worried about a constant climb rate or anything. That will come later.

My brother has the .46 AX in his. I think it has plenty of power for scale/aerobatic flying. Of course the verticals are not unlimited, but there's plenty of power to get you out of trouble if you need it (don't ask me how I know!!). I think we have a 12x6 prop on it now.
So just one more suggestion...be ready on the rudder on takeoff. I remember his first takeoff being a little "interesting". Maybe a few high speed runs would be a good idea.

Well I flew my maiden flight today.....It was awsome. I see what you were talking about when trying to take off. Yes it kinda wants to turn quit a bite. Well I fixed that and bent the tail wheel assembly the other direction just a little. Works great now. First landing was a little bouncy cause of the faster landing. But after a few touch and go's for practice, I got a little better. I love the roll rate of it. It does an awsome snap roll also. I love this plane. Ready to go again tomorrow. Oh yea, the wheels it comes with.....not very good on pavement. They breakdown pretty easy. I am going to switch them out with a half inch or so bigger rubber tire instead of the foam. Thanks for all of the advise.

Forgot to mention that after I was done with the build, I put it on the old balancing machine I got (which if anyone saw it they would have a really good laugh) it was perfect. Didn't have to add an ounce of wieght at all. The flight was perfect. No trim needed. Flew straight as an arrow. Where ever you pointed it it went.
If you are wondering what my balancing tool is. It's a Flat big hook that you would hang a bike or something from the cieling of your gaurage, mounted on a square peace of 2x4. You might think thats kinda risky, but hey it works perfect.

Glad to hear that everything went well! It's sure is a fun plane to fly and it looks good in the air too! Try a knife edge pass...they look beautiful!
Just a quick question, what prop are you running. We don't get to fly too often so we usually go with something that works and don't experiment too much. Seeing as you have the exact setup, maybe you have some suggestions. Have fun with it!

I am useing a 11x6 prop right now. But I am going to try a 12x6, that's what the .46 calls for with a sport plane. So I will see what happens this weekend. I will have to try a knife edge. I was just test flying it this weekend and didn't want to do anything to risky. I will throw that prop on it and let you know if it's any better. Still can't believe how nice it handles.

I just put a 12x6 prop on my extra and it feels like it has alot more pull, but we will see how it fly's this weekend. I might even try a 11x7 prop. We'll see....I guess I will just see what works best. I will be sure to let you know.
