Field Stand
At some fields whether they are club owned or public etc., there is nothing there where you can work on your plane (like putting the wing on). I came up with a solution. The field stand made out of pvc pipe. Its a real PITA to be bent over to work on something whether your checking your servo arms, linkages, putting in an rx batt etc. This stand is roughly 35 inches tall. Makes it easy to perform any type of maintenance etc. The pvc pipe, elbows and tees are out of 1/2 inch diameter. I used the TLAR method on building it. The bottom base has all the joints epoxied with 30 minute epoxy. The uprights come off of the base to ensure they don't take up room in your truck, van or car to make easy hauling to the flying field. I have two of these, one stays in the shop and the other travels. I'd say it could probably withstand up to 90 or 120 size. For heavier planes, just use the 3/4 or 1 inch stuff. I'd say it'd be the perfect thing for someone with a bad back not having to bend over just to make an adjustment to your aircraft. BTW, thats my Seagull Space Walker sitting on it. Now, some of you cheapskates are wonderin, "how much did it cost ya"???? About 5 or 10 bucks.
Beats the $30 they want for 'em at the LHS. So git out there and make yourself one!!!!!!!!

RE: Field Stand
Heres the one i tossed together. It is made for sitting on a table, or sitting on the ground and sitting down. I normally sit it on the table.
And it folds flat.

RE: Field Stand
We use four benches that we built to work on our planes. Only problem is that if there are more than four people, then someone has to wait for a bench, or assemble on the ground, so your idea is a pretty good one.
I will post a pix in the next reply.. cannot do it this way.

RE: Field Stand
My field has one bench like CGRetired, 4 home made wooden tables and 2 plastic top tables from Home Depot or Lowes. We used to have 4 of the Home Depot type but Easter of 2004 2 of them left. We figure one of the neighbors in the subdivision across the street were throwing an Easter party and decided they needed some extra tables, never came back. I hate thieves. Anyway, we also have one long bench with a vice built into it. Keeps us all happy. We'll replace the older wooden tables with plastic ones as soon as we can decide on a method of securing them from theft.

RE: Field Stand
Chad, nice stand. As long as they work as you intended them to.
One club I belong to has the wooden stands, 5 of them. I made the field stand not to start the engine but to mainly do routine tasks such as pre-flight and cleaning etc. The other club I belong has no stands. You start your plane from the ground with a tether attached. I just pound two pvc pipes into the ground in front of the horizontal stab. I don't trust a running engine when your in front of it.

RE: Field Stand
I've used a couple of those cheap plastic sawhorses at the field for setting up my plane. They work great, and small piece of plywood place between them on the crossbraces gives ya something to keep items off the ground.

RE: Field Stand
Martno1fan, the space walker 2 flies nice! Its 46 size and I have a ThunderTiger Pro .46 on it. Its a bit squirrely on the ground when taxi'ing but if you hold a little up elevator to keep the tail wheel on the ground, it isn't all that bad. Easy to see in the air. It will do all your basic aerobatics. The engine gets mounted almost upside down as the muffler is pointed down. A pitts style muffler would be ideal for this. As far as a 2nd plane, thats a good question! Its a low wing plane and the wing does have a little dihedral in it. It won't right itself after turns as the plane will go where you point it. I'd see it as a 3rd plane. A Goldberg Tiger 2 or Sig 4 * would most likely be a better choice for a 2nd plane.

RE: Field Stand
Looks like a nice stand. I made one from a metal folding sawhorse and a piece of 1/4" Masonite. Two bolts hold the masonite on the sawhorse, and there are half-round pieces of PVC pipe for wheel chocks. A 3/4" plywood "U" holds the back of the plane so there's no pressure on the tailskid. It also holds the plane for transportation. l'll get a picture posted later in the day.

RE: Field Stand
I've heard good things about the acro wot but have no idea if it would be a good second plane. I can recommend the Goldberg Tiger II in either 40 or 60 size and it comes kit or ARF.
