Default daily question - props

Is a 12x 10 prop too much for a sig 4 * 60?

I would go with a 12x6,maybe try a 12x8,but think 12x10 is a lot of pitch, only one way to find out.

This sounds like a lot of prop for this plane. The prop needs to be matched to the engine. Selection will vary somewhat. What engine are you using?

EXCAP is right, the prop should be matched to the engine, not the plane. If your engine is new, check the manual, it should tell you the recommended prop sizes. If you don't have the manual, go to the MFG website, most of them list the prop sizes there.

Actually, the prop should be matched to the engine FOR the desired performance envelope of the airplane. Your engine will have a range of prop combinations (diameter coupled with pitch)it will perform efficiently with. You need to select one that the engine "likes" and gives you the type of performance you desire for the aircraft the engine is installed on.

True, I just didn't go into that much detail.

Not me, get the prop first then order the engine!!
Late at night I made the assumption the engine was .60 2c, MY MISTAKE.

I should have been more clear on that. I have the os65la. I tried the 12 x 10 today and that did NOT work out well. Stopped off at the LHS and got 13 x 7 and 8. I guess if these don't fit well I should lower pitch even more?

Also, the manual recommends the 13 x 8 for stunt flying.

On the subject of props. Does anyone have any expeiernce with a Tiger 2 with an OS 60? If so what prop do you find to work best?

Try an APC 11/8 to 9 or 12/6 to 7 (always balance before use).
Assuming OS 60FX engine.

The larger diameter props will provide better overall performance. The Tiger II doesn't need a lot of speed. The larger / lower pitch will give better vertical performance for uplines and better brakeing on the down lines.

Thanks for the help EXCAP232,

The engine is actually an OS 60 Max FP. I am not sure of the difference between the MAX FP and the FX. Would this change any of your suggestions?

Also are there any advantages between a wood, nylon, or composite props?

Thanks,

Rob,

11X8 should do it for your LA 65, or for good vert. try a 14X5 or 13X5, not the easiest to find at your LHS but you CAN order them.

Yes there is a difference, a wood prop won't take your fingers off and is generally lighter.
