I am brand new to the flying game. I have a MDS .40 engine but I don't have a muffler yet for it. I was wondering if there is any other brand that is compatable with MDS because I am having a hard time finding the base model muffler that goes with it.

The Slimline #3314 is a pitts muffler to fit it.

You could call them (480-967-5053) and ask if this muffler fits any other engines.

The Tower muffler and the OS muffler will fit.
There are some very long threads on the MDS 40 engines with very mixed reviews on its' virtues. Don't spend too much time or money trying to get this engine to run well before going out and buying a good engine. Horizon is still a source for MDS parts I believe. MDS went out of business for a reason.

By the way, welcome to the forum.
I'd say start the engine up and see if it runs well before investing time and money in it. There ought to be someone in your area that will lend you a muffler to test run the engine before you go out and buy one. I got very frustrated as did many others using this engine. Ultimately I took all MDS 40 engines out of service although I still run the .25's.

Which style of MDS 40 do you have? There are the ones that the muffler bolts on from the exhaust side and then there is the bolt through style (like OS -TT motors). The mds .40's I've got are the standard FS series (has black head) that has a bolt on muffler from the exhaust side (the block is actually threaded not the muffler). If you have one of the newer series (40-48-58-68 with a silver head) those had the bolt through design for the exhaust.
Here's a pic of the black head 40 FS series that has a bolt on muffler:

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the help, I actually have the second one with the silver top. Everything I have read about the mds 40 says the same thing you guys are saying about its quality. It is used engine that I got from a friend. He is big into planes himself. He tested and tuned it before he sent it to me, so hopefully everything works good. The only problem still is finding the cheap 15 dollar muffler that it originally came with. I went to the link of the pitts muffler but I don't think I want to spend that kind of dough on a motor that may not last that long. My sister's boyfriend's uncle recently died and he had several planes. They are sending all four planes with complete engines to me in a week or so. I hope the engines on those are useable and not mds. I probably wont buy an mds engine again.
