Need help on choosing a simulator for practice
Hi All!!!
Need help on choosing a simulator for training. I want to be able to use my radio as a controller and not what comes with the simulator. (I think that will give me a better feeling and I’ll get used to my radio quicker with the controls and features) I am a beginner to this hobby and I don't want to crash on my first time solo. I have been practicing with a buddy cord, but I feel that I don’t get enough practice like that. I use a JR radio, it is not a new radio but it is not old ether. I have done some research on-line and there are quite few to choose from. I am trying not to spend a lot, but if I am spending a lot, I want to be sure that I am getting my moneys worth.

many hobby shops selling simulators carry cords ath connect your radio to the computer, however for software, ikarus, realflight, and dave brown would do the job, dave brown is slightly worse on graphics, however the price deduction is a nice benefit.

I have looked at the dave brown products but I was wondering on whats better to get G3 or realflight?

I'd try FMS and Smart Propo Plus to conect the JR to the PC through the lin-in on the sound card.
You can't go wrong with free..

the cabe for a JR is about as easy as it gets.. 1/8" mono phono jacks on each end.. wired ground to groud, tip to tip. 10k resistor from ground to tip on one end.
Don't feel like soldering.. you can always try a mono to mono cable from Radio Shack though there is a slight risk of over powering the line input.
You can't go wrong with free..

Thank you so much for the info. I was trying to find plans on how to make my own cable converter from JR to USB. I am sure that plans are out there, I just can't find them, but I'll be looking.

If you don't have a problem with making a PIC programer and etching PCB's it should be an easy project.

WO! I looked at the schematics and it looks harder to build your own than I thought. I thought it was only to rewire and to add some transistors to it, but it seems that it also involves programmable flash. That type of work is a bit out of my league. I think that I'll end up buying it .

Yeah it's hard to beat FMS for getting a feel for the Simulators and basic flying.
I'd give the Smart Propo setup a shot.. it's simple and works great..
worse case you are out $5 for the cable.
When I get around to buying a sim I'll get Aerofly Pro Deluxe (AFPD)
As for what flys better? G3 or AFPD? I can't say.. people will argue both sides to death.
AFPD about the same $$ as G3, comes with a USB adapter and the add-on's are free.
Yeah G3 comes with a tx box but I'd rather fly with my Tx anyway.

Having flown G2 & G3...they are very good simulators and will help you a great deal. If you want to learn 3-D ...then AFPD is by far the best choice. I learned how to hover on the deck and do rolling harriers that I had difficulty doing with G2

I have had the g2 version of realflight for over a year and it helped me alot. I think it is a shame that great planes didn't offer an upgrade option from g2 to g3. I'll bet there are some pretty good deals on used g2 out there.

Well I bought the Aerofly Pro Deluxe (AFPD). I hope that it will prepare me for the next season. Thank you everyone who participated in this forum and helped me out with my choice. I hope that this forum will help someone else as well. Thanks again.

I also just purchased AFPD - and hope it works as advertised with planes and also does a good job with Heli's - although I'm less sure about its Heli performance.
