Has anyone here converted one of those big styrofoam planes from the toy deptment at wally world? If so,how hard was it?I was considering it,Iffin I break it upon a bad landing it would be cheap to replace since they are only about $5

Doesnt it sound like fun?

Go to the eZone and on the left side click on Discussion. Then open the Search box. For Keyword enter WalMart and in the Search Forum box enter Foamies.

If you have access to old magazines there were articles on converting toy foam gliders in Model Aviation May 1995, Model Airplane News September 1994 and RC Report September 1997.

Default Foamies

RCSPUD,

Yes, I have converted them using Cox engines, 2 channel radio, and Norvel w/4channel radio.
Some suggestions- cut the wing roots so that the wing has little or no sweep, cut the elevator line straight and use balsa for the elevator. Tape on your components to find were they go for best balance before you cut out pockets for them, and use a little fiberglass tape under the wings for strength.
If you want to get crazy, you can cover them with low temp. covering, but paint or leaving them white works fine. Epoxy a piece of 1/8" ply to the nose for Cox eng., or cut a horizontal chunk out of the nose and epoxy two wood rails for the Norvels.
I have whipped up two of these in 3 hrs., and the most elaborate one I did took an evening.
If you want something a little more elaborate Lanier make a foam glider you can convert, but it's around 20.00 bucks.
A word of CAUTION- they are over powered!!! good EZ combat planes, too.
And, oh yeah, the E-power ones are O.K. too.

How do ya like that,I just got back from wally world(about 50 miles one way)and they didnt have any planes. They told me they were a seasonal item and only had them during the summer months.I tell you I get more and more disgusted with those people every time I go.But on the bright side I found a new hobby shop in town that will ship anything I want to me and bill me later.Aint that cool?

While I was in the HS a guy told me he would send me a Grasshopper RTF COD for the shipping.I told him to send it to me and give him my address.
So what is a Grasshopper anyway?

Oh no!
Not the dreaded grasshopper! This is an Ace product, and not one of their better ones. I agree w/ROG, send it back! I built one for a guy and his son, (I advised against it) but they "liked the way it looked" Its a box with a carbon fiber tailboom, and it rubberbands together- so it can take a whack. Good thing too. as that's about all it will do.
You can find the foam jets at your LHS. Also, look up Americas Hobby Center www.ahs1931.com for the one made by Comet.
Hope this helps.

Before you all get tied up in knots, think about the electronics.I know I cant buy the motor,servo's,3channel tx&rx for the $5-$6 anywhere else. How bout the carbon fiber and wheels? Its got to be worth it even if I junk the plane and use all the goodies inside.

Right???

Dont forget Im a hillbilly that lives in the sticks so I only get to go to the HS once or twice a month.Im not kidding when I say its 30-50 miles to anywhere.Im just trying to have some fun to.

Thanks for all your comments & please keep em coming.

Default HOLD ON THAR!!!

Spud,

Do you think your going to get all the motor, RX/ TX and all that in the kit for 5-6 dollars? If you are, give me the name of the hobby shop and I'll buy some stuff from him too!!

When you buy a kit ( what you see in the pictures) it's a box of wood and hardware and stuff you have to put together. You usually have to buy you radio, and eng/motor, and all that seperate. Also I have a feeling the hobbyshop guy is misleading you if you think your getting a kit for the price of C.O.D.!
