Default Winter storage

I just got back into RC and have a few of questions. My radio, (Futaba 7C), and engine, (Saito 82), were new this fall.
1. How should I treat the engine for a 6 mo layup?
2. Do I really need to get a battery cycler/charger for the TX and RX batteries?
3. Is fuel stable over the winter?

Thanks all!

Fuel will probably not last over 6 months, unless it is sealed, unopened. The saito's are real picky about old fuel. Cycler would be a good acquisition in the offseason, as it will help you determine how well your batteries have survived the winter. I'd charge them at least once a month, as they will discharge by themselves sitting on the shelf. Motor should be fine, just put lots of afterrun oil in it (ATF) to protect the bearings. Keep the TX stored inside--it only makes sense. I keep all of my stuff outside, but it doesn't get as cold down here, and I fly as much as possible during the winter.

Your fuel will be fine over the winter. If you can cap it and store it in a dark place, that would be good. I leave all my batteries on trickle charge. If you can not do that, you could charge them up and take them in where it is warm if they are not already. I replace my battery packs every other year. If you use nicad, they are only 8 bucks a pack, why take a chance. As previously stated, put lots of after run oil in the motors and they will winter just fine.

Thanks!! What is the best way to get the oil into the engine? ATF is OK? Any type?

I'm not telling you to throw your fuel away--that is the last thing I'm telling you to do. HOwever, all I'm saying is that if you truely aren't going to be flying for SIX months, then don't expect a previously open container of fuel to satisfy that saito. I've had fuel go bad that sat for only a couple of months. And, it really didn't "sit," but rather it just took me that long to use it--flying was slow for a period. Sure, the OS 40 LA's would run it fine--but they'd run on FAI fuel just fine. However, the saito wouldn't even start on it. Just my .02!
