Our club has a 425' foot of asphalt, chain link barrier fencing and a 24 X 24 foot metal pavillion with enclosed locking closet/snack bar. We also have fresh water and a functional indoor toilet with running water. It is located on a great site. We have about 25 members and some of them complain about paying $100 a year to fly, say it is too high. They have no idea what it takes to keep up a place. This past year we purchased a new lawn mower to keep the grass cut, at a cost of $1800.
Again I don't understand it, it equals out to about $8 a month for a fenced in site, with 24 hours access and all the amentities described. At the last meeting these guys raised such a ruckus that the club was forced to reduce our dues to $58 a year. I do not know how we will now be able to keep up our field and finish the projects we had started. I understand how these things get expensive, but for the things we were trying to do, I do not think the dues were out of order, especially with the loss of flying sites all over the country.
Sorry to vent, but reading this thread reminded me.....

So far, no one has attacked you --- only what you said -- and what you said was a deliberate troll. I know that it's a troll because no half-way intelligent critter would suggest to a newb that having a few beers at the flying field was good advice, or even remotely responsible.

No, I don't think it's "rather rude" to respond in such a manner to the suggestion that drinking beer, or any other alcohol, while flying is ok. You already knew it was a bad idea, hence your derogatory comments "getting their panties in a bunch" and "untangle your panties".

While it's obvious you have no regard for this important safety issue, or you're just trolling for an argument, this is a beginners forum. It does not seem appropriate to advocate ignoring established safety rules, or belittling those who do stress safety.

Do everyone else around you a favor and leave the beer at home, you will survive without it.

You struck a nerve. I don't want to get into, or lengthen any urination competition that may be going on....BUT...

If ANYONE brought 'one or two' alcoholic beverages to our field, he or she would be removed and membership revoked. I am sorry, but if you need a beer or two to enhance your flying experience.....perhaps this is not the hobby for you. I do not want to have anyone around me who is PURPOSELY impaired. There is enough impairment from fatigue, medication and just plain stupidity to fill the quota.

The mere mention of drinking and flying POWERED models is ridiculous and I can't imagine any club allowing it. I hope I don't sound argumentative, but sheesh.....bringing ANY controlled substance to a family flying field is just plain stupid, (and yes, alcohol is a controlled substance in this and most other countries).

Perhaps, if you (anyone) think(s) it's 'normal' to use alcohol in situations where it is CLEARLY inappropriate, you should seek help. Trust me, I did my share of drinking in college and saw people get hurt and one guy even killed by a boat propeller because the driver had 'had one or two' and forgot to do his 'safety check'...sound familiar?

OK, I'm off the soapbox but please ....PULEEEEZE never even insinuate that alcohol and flying can ever mix in any situation. That is just untrue.

would it be bad then to drink a beer at the fied why WATCHING people fly, if i leave my plane at home? and i have a DD;designated driver.
or after i have finished flying and i'm standing around with the fellas, shoot'in the you know what.

And i will admit i knew this was a touchy subject but i didn't believe the person who told me. i said are you serious. he said yep. and know i now he wasn't joking.

At our field and many others, the policy is zero alcohol. None on the flight line, pits, spectator area, parking lot, etc. Many who know me can assure you that I'm far from a prohibitionist, but I agree that there are just some activities that do not mix with alcohol. There's just no need to be drinking at the flying field.

No alcohol is allowed on our field at any time under any circumstances. The only time it has been there is when the punks from the local subdivision come to the field to drink at night while we are not there. That is also when they usually vandalize the place, destroying our property. Then they leave their empty cans and broken bottles and other trash for us to clean up for them. 2 years ago they even stole 2 of our tables the day before Easter. Guess they were having a party and needed some more tables. [:@]

Yes, because alchohol is SOOOO evil that consuming it while even spectating flying will result in a bloodbath.

Some old guy with fading vision or poor hearing can fly...but somone whos drinking just watching is more dangerous...good call.

This guy isnt a troll, hes realistic...this forum is filled with "OMG THE PLANE IS GOING TO SLAUGHTER EVERYONE IN A 10 MILE RADIUS" rediculous attitude.

At some point in the last 10 years in America, it has gotten to the point that people cant differenciate between drinking and being drunk. I dont use tobacco products...but i used to dip, i would get lighthead for 3 or 4 minutes from the niccotine rush...but i could fly at your feild probably, right? Yet im a big dude, i can clear 6 cans of beer and not even get a slight buzz...(which is why i dont drink beer...) ... but if you see me take a drink of beer...im DANGEROUS!!!! OH NO...call the EMS now, people are GOING TO DIE!!! RAHHHHHH!!!

Rules are good when used with good judgement, blanket rules are never a good idea though...ever...

This is a toy/game/hobby ... its meant to be fun. When people start to regulate every aspect of it, it becomes not so fun...

Im not saying let someone fly drunk or even buzzed, but if somone is done flying for the day, let them sit back and enjoy a cold drink, as long as they are old enough, i cant see the harm.

I also enjoy a few cold ones (and sometimes a little mary jane at the field, relaxing and flying with the guys. I find that I fly better with about 2-3 beers in me. After I finish off a 6 pack the flying starts to get sloppy, its at that point that I just decide to pack it up and head home.

A little beer never hurt anyone.

The issue isn't about the difference between drinking and being drunk, it's about drinking or not drinking. Study after study shows that those people who think they can handle alcohol actually can't. So, the AMA has a really simple rule, NO ALCOHOL. It wouldn't surprise me if several posts in this thread suddenly disappeared, or at least were severly shortened.

Well, if its more fun for you to follow all the rules, then go for it.

lets see, the common ones.

Dont start your engine untill your 5 feet from the active runway.
When you take off, fly to the prescribed altitude.
Once at altitude, stay in a pattern, rounded rectangle please.
No aerobatics close enough to the runway to see what you're doing
Make sure to smirk with disgust at the helicopter guys if they try to take off within earshot.
3D is not allowed unless you can do it at 300 feet away
No low passes over the runway
Make sure to yell your every intention to everyone
If you land outside of the center of the runway, you will be banned from flying.

And my personal favorite

Stand in this box we built fo you next to the runway, that you cant get out of quickly in an emergency...for your own saftey of course...

Now, aside from the heli part, ive seen those rules at clubs...how the hell can you have dun flying in a big circle all day? seems silly to me, and anyone who is in this for the fun of it...

on the main subject,
i have visited my local club field once, and it is just that, a field with mown runways. not shelter, tables or and other amenities. cost joining fee £55 annual fee £57 inc BMFA insurance.
seem a friendly bunch and offer free training.

on the "OFF" subject,
in my youth i drank (as i still do) and drove a few times until one time i had a near miss, only involving myself. i have since viewed drinking should not be associated with any kind of machine operation, be it car, bike, lathe, drill and i don't think flying a projectile at speeds up 100MPH should be done either.
although i don't see any harm in a beer after when packing up or spectating, providing your not driving home

Ok, I've been away from my computer for part of today otherwise I would have dealt with this before now. It looks like this subject is turning into a little war very quickly which had drawn away from the topic at hand. This is no good. So I'm going to close down this thread as I can't see anything good coming from this little arguement that is going on here.
