Once I get trained and am flying solo I will most likely be flying on both sides of the border. I live in Canada less than 15 mins from Washington state. I have a friend with a farm on the other side of the line who has been into RC for a few years and we've talked about building ourselves a little flying field. I also have family with a farm nearby that I go and visit several times a month. So most of my weekends (flying days) are spent stateside, which begs the question - should I join AMA, MAAC, or both? If I belong to one, am I covered in the other country? Driving to Washington will be more convienent than the flying fields around here - they are both at least a 40 min drive on a good traffic day.

The choice is very straightforward. If you are training in Canada at a MAAC chartered club, you will need MAAC membership -- period. Additionally, MAAC insurance is primary insurance -- it pays first & has $5M coverage. In the unlikely event that $5M is insufficient, your personal liability ins pays the balance. Your MAAC ins will cover you in the USA.

AMA ins is secondary -- your personal liability ins pays first -- then AMA tops up the payout to the limit of AMA liability. This puts the onus on you to have adequate personal coverage & puts your coverage at risk of subsequent premium increases or refusal to re-insure, in the event of a big payout.


Get the MAAC membership first -- after that, AMA membership is your choice.

britbrat, I am curious & you seem to be pretty informed on the matter. You stated that his Canadian membership would cover him while flying in the states. Do you know if the AMA covers us if we were to fly in Canada??

It does.

MAAC insurance is worldwide. When an AMA member flies in Canada -- he is actually covered by MAAC insurance.

Are you serious about MAAC membership/insurance? If so, I will enquire about non-Canadian/non-resident elligibility. I know that Canadians overseas are elligible, but I don't know about non-citizens, although I don't see why not.

Go for the Canadian MAAC. It has the benefit of free shipping with orders over $100.00 with Great Hobbies which is our Canadian equivelent of Tower Hobbies. You do have to supply them with your MAAC number once you get it. It also gives you discounts with some other Canadian mail order planes as well. Your membership includes a monthly magazine and if you renew early in the year they also send you a cool crest that you can sew on your jacket. Check out Great Hobbies site listed below. Better prices than buying from TH when you take into account the shipping and US/Can. dollar and good people to deal with. Only bad thing is they don't sell the Tower Hobbies 75 engines (my favorite 60 size engine)!! [8D]
