Default STUPID!

Yeah well today I made a stupid/stuborn person mistake. It was going to be my first time flying my spad and I have had trouble starting my engine since I am new to RC airplanes. Well anyways im outside infront of my plane trying to start it
(mind you that i am in a wheel chair due to broken ankles) and i didnt notice but the throttle was already at least half way open. So when i flip the prop, the engine started amazing except really loud. Next thing i notice my airplane is coming towards my legs but luckly misses and slams into my wheelchair. The prop broke into a billion pieces but other than that, the rest is ok. At least now i know it goes foward. Next time i will get someone to hold it....i think that would be smart. Laterz

Glad to hear that you are ok and that you may have learned a lesson without getting hurt, --- we can just hope the lesson sticks.
You should NEVER try to start an engine on a plane or off unless it is restrained, there are too many things that can go wrong. Again glad you are ok. ENJOY !!! RED

Also reinforces another great rule..

Never fire up an engine more than yelling distance away from someone...especially being in a wheelchair

It could just have easily came quicker and got your hand, or even worse, your wrist, it doesnt take long to bleed out from a cut wrist, if you dont get something on it in about 30 seconds, your going to become so disoriented you wont be able to help yourself, and that would be a silly way to go out.

I had an electric park flyer bite me in the wrist, was suprised to look down and see how deep it got my wrist...it was clean through the skin and i could see the muscle...another fraction of an inch and it would have been an artery, and i was not near anyone...(my blade was sharpened - not by choice, just a few landings on concrete...)

Complacency really can kill...

Sounds as if you have learned a valuable lesson. Our hobby is very enjoyable, yet in the right enviorment can be very painful. Always practice safe methods and do alot of double checks on all systems and don't be afraid to ask for assisitance. Good Luck, Dave

Josh - very glad you were not hurt. I hope you will recall the warnings we gave you in previous threads about having assistance. These things ARE dangerous if not handled carefully. That is a powerful veg-a-matic up front just waiting to eat something.

Don't mean this to be an "I told you so" letter so I'll stop here and hope your next attempt is better.

Our club almost lost a member last year due to a starting mishap like this one, but with a big plane. You don't want to hear the details, believe me. The club now requires all planes to be restrained when starting and we built six starting stands with built in restraints to help accomodate the members.
