Hi chaps,

First of all thanks to all who helped in my earlier posting on finding a good 60 sized trainer. My next question is obviously a good motor to go with it. Am aware that an O.S. or YS or similar would be great but what about these ones?

GMS .61 BB Ringed w/Muffler
SuperTigre G-61 ABC w/Muffler

Trying to see if some economy would go wrong.

I haven't heard anything bad about the Super Tigre.

I would choose Magnum before Tower or GMS. I recall seeing good prices on them in Singapore.

If the Tower 61 (made by GMS ) is anything like their 46, you will have plenty of power, HOWEVER you will have a multitude of other problems - air leaks, poor idle, poor transition. The majority of these problems can be corrected with time, determination and some silicone. If you want the aggravation, go for it. Do a search here on TH and Tower Hobbies engines and form your own decisions.

I have not heard anything negative about the Super Tigre engines.

If you want something good in an economy engine, I would look at Thunder Tiger and Evolution engines. I have both brands and have not had a bit of trouble with either one. One alleged advantage to the EVO engine is that they are broke in and pre set at the factory.

I had the TT61 and it was superb, no issues on tuning, always starts with a flip or two. No overheating problems also. Try the ASP engines, they are very cheap and they run very well. Why not try a 90 sized 2C since the weight is about the same? As for ST engines, I am a sceptic after trying one and seeing a few run.

TT 61 Pro is my choice for a 61 sport engine. Lots of zip, dead reliable, easy to tune & a very long life.

Forget the GMS

The Tower is OK -- really strong.

ST is OK as well, but the carb is so-so.

If you want a high quality, but inexpensive 61, the TT 61 GP is an excellent choice -- more powerfull than some BB types (OS 61 FX for example) & has the advantage of a long-lived trouble-free plain bearing.

I'd have to vote for the Evolution 61. I've got two of them, and they both run perfectly. Easy to tune, and they have a bit more power than some of the other 61 size engines listed here. Good price, too.

I'd second the evolution .61. When my alpha 60 died I put the .61 in a .48 wm clipped wing cub and its overpowers it beautifully and is quite reliable

the OS 61 runs like a top little more costly but worth it very smooth and reliable

I am running a Tower Hobbies 46 ABC in my Hobbico Superstar 60, and it pulls the plane through the air with authority. The specs on this engine show it to be almost as powerful as most 60's. It does have some problems with air leaks, etc., but after all that is solved, it is a great engine. Glen

Evolution .61. Have two, never any problems. Easy to keep tuned, no dead sticks in many flights.

I have an EVO 61, lots of stupid finicky problems, I pulled it and its on the shelf some where. Super Tiger, also one of my least favorites for lots of reasons. Finciky to adjust and the carb barrel has a rough finish which has suddenly frozen the throttle setting in one position on a lot of the engines at our field. OS, smooth and reliable, easy to adjust but not not really powerful. Also a bit pricy. ASP super series, it takes a lot of break in time and the carb can be tricky to adjust. If you have the time and patience for this and get the right setting the power is awesome! The Thunder Tigers are pretty good.

The best engine in this class I found is the Tower Hobbies 75. Easy to adjust, tons of power, reliable, and also happens to be inexpensive. You can also get a Pitts style muffler for it if you need to mount the engine sideways. I have 3 of them now.

If the choice includes 75-size engines, I absolutely agree.

Gotta go with the Evolution .61 It powered my Funtana and a Great Planes Extra 300 with ease. Starts on the first flip. Cant beat it for $80 to $100.

A friend gave me a 60% complete Supersportster 60 to finish up. I really didn't want it but finished up up and bought a Tower 61 because it was the cheapest bb engine I could find. The engine started on the first flip when I was breaking it in and has run perfect ever since. I regard it as one of the best of my 17 engines and fly this plane more than any of my others. I also have a couple ST 40 engines I fly a lot and these are also among the best of my engines.

I would have to go with the Thunder Tiger Pro61. I don't think you can find a more dependable and powerful engine for the money.

Where can one get a new Evolution .61 for this price. The lowest I can find is $120.

Never seen one priced below $120. I paid $130 for each of mine, so if you found one for $120, I'd jump on it.

try the supre tigre. There a little finicky tuning on the bottom end(had someone do mine for me) but there good motors. I have the .75 and i think i payed less than a hundred for it...

Hey! No one mentioned the OS 65LA. Mine runs great and the price is right. $109 or less.

I don't think you can beat ST for the price. In my experience, they come from the factory with the low end set rich, and it's hard to get a smooth transition until the engine's broken in. Which might make them seem finicky.

Hi folk! If i would choose an engine for my trainer, i would opt for the Supertigre G 61,a TREMENDOUS engine, very powerful, good runner and also very durable. Try to obtain the ringed version if you plan to put it on your trainer, it´s run more docile than the ABC version ( a little more powerful).

Don't discount the Thunder Tiger GP 61 either. I've got one I picked up off EBay for $57 (USD). It turns a 13x4 APC prop at 12,600 rpm. Its easy to start, easy to tune, and has proven to be very hardy (survived some major crashes). I'm willing to bet you can pick them up pretty inexpensively in Malaysia.

What I notice on the Super Tigre engines, is that the venturi seems extra large, which may make fuel draw difficult at low rpm's and may frustrate some. I haven't had an ABC ST yet but the ringed do need time to break in.
